A great Rags clan Easter

Rags's picture

We had 7/10 of the Rags clan at mom and dad's for Easter weekend. My bride and I, our son, and my niece and eldest nephew. My brother, SIL, and youngest nephew were at their home in Asia and could not make it due to my brother's work and nephew's school schedule.

All in all a pretty good weekend. The three young people who made it are all inspiring and inspired performers.

A note to my son. Congratulations son. Today you complete your first 6yr enlistment in the USAF!

Son,

Today is April 12th. Today you complete your first 6yrs in the Air Force and tomorrow begins a new phase of your Air Force journey. Congratulations.

Being your dad is what I am most proud of in my life. You and your mom make me a better me. The man you have become makes me proud and your example challenges me to continue to step up my game. That you chose me as your dad, though about 23 years after I happily took the position, and live your life and serve our country with our family name on your chest gets me every time I think about it.

I read a thing on parenting recently that piqued my interest and now I can't find it. But I do recall the basic message.

The premise of the article is something along the lines below.

What differentiates good parents from successful parents is raising kids to use their heads beyond just complying with rules. Rules are the foundation that parents should use to launch kids into the realm of rational analysis about their choices. For kids that can't or refuse to make that advancement then they have no choice but to comply with the rules or suffer the consequences. Kids who can move to a state of proactive rational analysis of their decisions rarely struggle with rules.

I'm back!

December was a hoppin month for us. We left our Morocco assignment, enjoyed the holidays with my family in the States, I saw my brother for the first time in 3-4 years (we can't agree on when we last saw each other), and I returned to the GCC for another assignment.

My son just re-enlisted... Woo Hoo!

Well, the USAF offered my son Germany as the country of his next duty station and he decided to accept it. On Wed of this week he re-enlisted for 4 more years.

This will get him to 10 years and half way to retirement.

I am proud of that young man. He makes me proud to be his dad every day.

It is a great Christmas in the Rags clan. The kid's decision is the best gift this dad could wish for.

Gak!!! Just finished watching PRETTY WOMAN... and now THE BLIND SIDE is coming on the tube

I put my bride on a plane for home at the butt crack of dawn yesterday.

We are heading back to the states after a year and a half in Morocco and 5 years as expats.

I am burning off my last few days of comp time before cranking out my last couple of weeks on this assignment.

Today I have been cleaning up my personal files, getting my crap ready to go in suit cases, and having a movie fest watching whatever movies are on MBC2 while I plink around getting personal stuff done.

Update on the move

The packing crew showed up at 0900 on Monday and drove off with our stuff at 2130. The apartment is a bit cold and echo-ee without our art and carpets to warm it up and tone it down a bit.

I have survived.... for now. Tuesday and Wednesday were closely run things as far as my survival is concerned but Thursday and today are safe... so far.
