OT - New Mattress

justmakingthebest's picture

DH and I are going shopping this weekend. Does anyone have a mattress that they love? I realized that mine is 10 years old- which is probably why my back has been hurting (I'm not just old! LOL). The one we currently have is a hybrid and I loved it, but there are so many options!

  • Sleep number
  • Purple
  • Tempurpedic
  • Standard
  • Hybrid
  • To flip or not flip

The list goes on and on! Has anyone bought anything recently that they love? I figure before we go throw down a few grand on a bed, I should check with the best group ever!

We recently got a latex mattress. I did a lot of research because I have allergies, sleep hot, and we both have insomnia.  It's okay - it's more firm than I thought it would be based on reviews, but they are very durable and supposedly less like to harbor dust mites.

I wouldn't say I love it, but it's good to hear from mediocre reviewers, too, lol.

I tried the purple mattress and it was like laying on a weird lumpy fold out mattress, would not recommend, but that's just me.

I've tried sleep number at hotels and I can't seem to get it adjusted to the right place so I always feel like I am sinking in or it's too high up and firm.

DH and I have a memory foam with spring mattress and I like it, I don't love it, but I get a good nights sleep.

Plus mattress topper and steel foundation/boxspring.  I'm short so I almost need a step stool to get into bed.

I have a sleep number bed with a pillow top. You can order extra soft pillow top if you want. It is the most awesome bed I ever slept in. When I travel I miss my bed. If you have back problems it helps. The only down fall is summer time the pillow top can be a bit warm. But then when it is hot I have the air on. I really think you should check it out.

DH and I bought a Tuft and Needle mattress a few years ago and it is the best mattress we have ever had.  We liked it so much that we just upgraded to their new Mint mattress.

Best gift ever!  We got a Wink Bed and I love it.  It's a hybrid, but it's great.  Both of us have less aches and pains than we did with our 3 year old latex or with the Tempurpedic we had before that (that slept SOOO hot!)

We've got a Sealy, probably mid-to-upper end.  It was still ridiculously expensive (it's a king).  It's comfortable, but I'm young and have no issues, so I'm probably not a good test.  My parents had a Tempurpedic and a Sleep Number before going with an Avocado a year or so ago.  They bought the Avocado online and without even testing it out first, but they said they prefer it to all of their prior mattresses.  They have just the mattress - no topper.

This is a sore subject for me (pun intended).

Our favorite mattress was some sort of Beautyrest plush semifirm fluffy pillowtop we got off craigslist as a factory defect (there is a factory close by).  It was like sleeping on a cloud and we loved it for 10 years until it got saggy about a year ago.

I decided to go a little firmer so I could sleep on my stomach a little easier, so I bought PHILLIPSBURG III LUXURY FIRM PILLOW TOP.  The pillowtop is not fluffy, and after one month there was already an indentation in the memoryfoam where I sleep.  I still cannot sleep comfortably on my stomach, and the mattress is so firm, it makes my shoulder and hip ache.

So I was thinking about selling it and replacing it with this one, which is getting great reviews, and may be more like the old one we loved.

I got a Tempurpedic mattress topper.  One of the best investments I ever made.  I stuck it on top of my old way too hard mattress, and have slept soundly ever since.  I slept on a Tempurpedic mattress at my fiance's house.  I swear, I couldn't tell the difference between the $5/6k mattress and the $400 topper.

Both DH and i disllike pillow tops and like a firmer mattress.

We ended up, unplanned, buying ours from Ikea. We love it. It's one of their higher end mattresses, no pillow top, firm but not soft, flippable, and we love it - made for a platform bed btw.  I think it's juuuuuust starting to show some wear after 5-6 years.  I think we've got another good year to go with it before we think about replacement.

I LOVE my purple mattress! I have the premier version. Most comfortable mattress I've ever owned. I'm a side sleeper, so I need a mattress to conform to my body somewhat, but I also turn over several times a night and so it can't conform SO much that when I switch sides it leaves an indentation that takes half an hour to level out. I don't even know if that makes sense, lol. But the Purple mattress is perfect for me.

We have an adjustable Tempurpedic and love it!  It's the hybrid mattress.  I never thought I would actually use the adjustable part of this amazing bed, but I use it all. the. time.

I am looking at a lot of adjustable options! DH has sleep apnea and FINALLY got approved for a CPAP this week. His snoring can shake the walls though. The idea of being able to adjust him when he is dead to the world sounds AMAZING!!! He is such a hard sleeper that me kicking and pushing and even "forcefully speaking" is nothing to him.

justmakingthebest We were able to get a free CPAP for my DH thru the local VA Hospital.
