Getting ready for kitty

Sweet T's picture

Today we bought a new litter box for our new addition. I know mil will send one home with her but I want one for upstairs and one for downstairs. Kind of cool they now have flap doors. I have filled it with litter and put it in the living room, wiener dog has had zero interest in it.

I am so hoping she will be like she is with my families dogs when they come to visit. She really has no interest and will let them eat from her dish.

I sure hope so. I have a lot of crap going on right now and health issues, I personally need our good deed to be a non issue right now.

Warning: wiener dog might become interested once kitty starts using the litter box. Some dogs think it's a snack tray.

Watch kitty to make sure she is okay with the flap doors. Some kitties don't like them.

Dogs should not be eating cat food. Their nutritional needs are different. Cat food has more protein and fat and dogs can get sick from eating it.

Hope you have inter-species harmony!!

Thing2 is back home temporarily until he leaves for Japan. His beloved kitty will be staying with us. I'm super happy to have a cat back in the house!

However, new kitty is having trouble figuring out the flap door on our litter box. It's the exact same litter box she had at Thing2's house, but he took the lid off, claiming that she did not like it.

Her first night in our house, she did manage to find the litter box and poop in it so I'm guessing she figured it out.

I did catch her yesterday pawing at it making sure she could move it to get inside. It's pretty funny to watch, but I'm guessing she'll figure it all out, especially since she has used it, as evidenced by the poop and clumps of pee I cleaned out this morning Smile

My mouser absolutely refused to use the litter box with the flap, so I ended up taking it off. He was uber-sensitive and very high strung and that flap freaked him out something fierce. Possibly because he could not make a fast exit from the box.

Both my cats use that breeze pellet system where the poop stays on top but the the pee goes down on a pee pad. It is probably a little more than regular litter but man the smell is way less and it is way less messy. Yeah the pellets still get flung out but not like liter does and I also do not have to worry about it getting all in their paws. I love this system have one for each of my boys.

It wasn't the litter that bothered him - he used the other 3 boxes. Once I removed the flap, he was fine. Smile

Cats can be so picky sometimes. I am pretty good about cleaning up their litter boxes but boy when I slack just a little my one has no issue letting me know.

Part of it is their sense of smell - it's stronger than humans. Imagine someone pooping in the toilet and NOT flushing. 3-4 times. :?

True. They have a good sense of smell. I just laugh if I miss it one day he meows really loud and will lead me sometimes to the box. Cracks me up.

Be thankful he does that instead of tinkling somewhere else... against a wall, in your shoe, on the bed...

My sister had a cat who would poop/potty ONCE in a litter box. If there was not another box available, he went wherever he felt like it. His previous owner did not clean his box often and the poor thing developed a phobia. Sis had to scoop all 4 litter boxes twice a day: in the morning, and after work.

Oh man I am so thankful I do not need to do that. She must have really loved the little critter. I would do the same for mine as well.

I have had 2 cats and 2 dogs at the same time but had huge house...so cat crunchys were pretty much a non issue.

I plan on keeping cat food up high as princess ninja wiener eats holistic dog food because of sensitive tummy. Thankfully dog ice cream is ok

Good! You don't want princess sensitive tummy eating food that might cause vomiting and diarrhea!
