FML...DH is going to quit smoking!!

Willow2010's picture

UGH…I am not a happy person at the moment and I feel like a shit for it. DH just text me and told me that he has not had a cigarette all day and he is going to quit smoking.

Which sounds great at first glance right? I actually broke out in a cold sweat when he told me that. He quit smoking about 5 years ago for over 2 years. IT WAS AWEFUL!!!

He turns into a terrible person. His whole personality changes. And he gained about 80 LBS. The last time he quit smoking…we nearly split up, none of the kids could not stand to be around him, people at his job wanted him to quit because he was such an asshole. He was just a mean, aggressive, terrible person. No one wanted to be around him at all he was so different than his normal self. And it lasted the whole 2 years he did not smoke.

He changed back to the sweet man I fell in love with, on the day he started smoking again. And he lost the 80 extra lbs. LOL.

I feel like a turd at the moment…I know he needs support, but I do not want him to quit dang it! I know, I know, it is supposed to be great for him to quit smoking and blablabla.

But him being stressed, uptight, mean and him getting morbidly obese cant’ be great for him. KWIM?

DH has a want to quit, his Dr tells him to quit, etc. He quit (actually just switched to dip) gained 50 lbs and the Dr scolds him for the weight gain. He finally had it out with the Dr...."pick one, smoking or weight, because I don't sleep with you and I don't have to put up with you scolding me" He started smoking again.

I want us to quit smoking but cannot live with a grown man complaining about his pants not fitting all the time. }:)

Is he aware of how awful he was?

He says he did not see how terrible he was. He also says that he must have been since every person in his life could not stand him for those two years.

DH will only quit cold turkey. He has tried several other ways, years ago and they did not help at all.

I have an ecig too. I really WANT to like it. I would much rather be addicted to that than to cigarettes. It is much less harmful. I just can't seem to "like" it as much as smoking. And yes...I do like smoking. I smoke about 6 cigs a day and I enjoy everyone of them.

I know it is terrible. lol

Edit to add...I actually smoke about 10 cigs a day..not 6.

I do the same Willow. I do feel better and the doc said my lungs sound better but I just can't stop from having 5 - 10 a day but I guess that is better than 20 or more and I'm also seeing the money side of it too!

Not the quitting smoking talk..very happy smoker here! Then comes the DH who is ready to quit, I think they act out on their crabbiness more then women do. I hope your DH is not a drinker or have ADHD, tends to make it worse. I quit once and found it easier to remain taking cigarette breaks. Breathed in and out imagining it was a cigarette I was sucking down and it helped with lowering my anxiety of nicking out. Also helped with not having to break a habit while trying to overcome the nicotine withdrawal at the same time.

It made me laugh that you ETA 10 not 6. You just couldn't sneak in a little white lie Eye-wink too funny.

LOL..Not a white lie...I just started adding up what I smoke and it was more than I thought!

He is both. Not a heavy drinker, but a few every night, never drunk or even buzzed. And "I" think he has a small case of ADHD.

Another idea and my DH will be using it, is make a ball he can squeeze and keep his hands busy with. All you do is grab a small balloon and using a small funnel thing, fill it with flour. The more air you squeeze from it, the firmer you can make it. It can be a great tool if you guys are watching a movie or such.

DH and I are 26 days nicotine-free. We threw our last cigs in the trash when we got on the plane to go to FL for 2 weeks on May 3. The first week was rough, but it is much better now, and we are feeling great. At our ages, (57 and 52), it was important to stop if we wanted to enjoy any retirement years without dragging around oxygen tanks. The $300/month savings will pay off some bills and make it possible for me to retire early. DH had been using the ecig for a while prior, but it just prolonged the nicotine addiction. You have to approach this as an addiction, and maybe use some of the 12-step philosophy to get free. I know I begged a Higher Power to give me strength. On day 5, DH bought a pack and a lighter and I locked him out of the car in Orlando until he threw them away. It was a close call, but he thanks me now.

YES! A good e-cig is way helpful. I quit smoking at the end of 2012 with my totally wicked e-cig. I tried a different brand before and it just didn't work for me. But, I've been cigarette free since the day after Christmas and couldn't be happier. In fact, after about three months of no cigarettes and strictly vaping with my e-cig, I tried a puff off of SO's cigarette at a bar one night and it was DISGUSTING. I'm glad I found my e-cig (I know, this probably sounds like a sales pitch, but, everyone I know who has used this brand has quit and never looked back).

Agreed! I got a cheap kit from Apollo to start. It was OK. But it just wasn't great. Then I switched to the Tornado tank from totally wicked and I instantly went from smoking a pack a day to having one or two every couple of days. I don't miss it one bit. I will admit, though, I had health reasons to quit smoking as soon as humanly possible, but, I think the kind of ecig I used definitely helped. Even SO tried the old one that failed me and he didn't take to it. I will say that the worst was one day when I ran out of liquid and had to get a cheap disposable. I was MISERABLE haha. It just wasn't the same.
