Just got back from a week in Florida with DH

And I am so ready to move there. He has family there, and I am ready to get the hell out of California. If I didn't have to share my DD's we would be gone. Doubt BM would even notice if we took SS and moved. Not that we would just do that without handling it legally, but seriously, it would take a long time for her to figure it out.

It averages 110 here in the summer. Dry heat. It's SO HOT. But then in the winter it is SUPER COLD AND WINDY. I hate it. I would take heat, wet or dry over the could any day of the week!! But I also just want to get out of California. We are taxed like crazy here, and it would be nice to get as far away from BM as possible.

It depends on where you live in FL..lol.

There are some super nice places and some.. not so much! Oh.. and the weather this time of year is lovely most places.. but try July..lmao!

On the flip side, you can live relatively cheaply in FL compared to some other places in the country.. lots of CA would be more expensive!

We live in a great place, but I've been here 17 yrs and DH has been here his entire life. We are ready to try something different. But we have 7 years before SS turns 18.

I am always fantasizing about moving. 6 more years babay! We live in the Central Coast California, Salad Bowl of the US, and also murder capital.
BM is right around the corner from us, so if she ever needs anything...yuk. And Well, its a small town, either way. Am needing a fresh start. I have family in Florida - it looks so nice and friendly with loads of interesting culture.

Hurricane Charley was a 4 and many people stayed. We weren't here yet. It is difficult for a hurricane to enter the gulf, make a sharp turn and head directly towards our city. However, it could happen and has. I have friends inland who have told us to head to their place, in addition to my son being inland.

Our place is only a mile from the gulf ! We actually are on a canal with gulf access. We had some damage from the hurricane last year, but it was roof related, we did not have any flooding though there were some around.

Basically, anywhere you live there is some risk of natural disaster whether it be tornado, hurricane, earthquake, flooding etc..

I'm not so worried about anything sinking into the sea though.. I don't think that will happen in my lifetime!

I live in a small town on the Panhandle. Where I work, you can smell the Gulf of Mexico. It's about a 30 minute drive from my home. We stayed for Ivan but were forced to evacuate for Dennis because our youngest had health problems and DH was AD Air Force.

I remember when we drove down the west coast of Florida looking at towns, when we got to Venice, Florida we heard a lot of people from Venice, California were moving there. It is a cute down, much cheaper than CA, and coincidental city name.

The water in Venice California is murky and cold. The water in Florida, warm and crystal clear. I was sold the minute I stuck my big toe in.

Although, the 4 ft shark that was attacking something about 50 yards off shore on Sunday may keep me from ever going in deeper than my ankles...

Oh that would be scary! Well, I am in the water a lot and I have never seen a shark. We do have a lot of dolphins here, not quite as scary!

Our plans are to retire to Florida too. We'd go now if it wasn't for SS. Only 13 more years to go!

The weather might be a bit better up here in NorCal, but it's still hot in summer and we are still taxed up the ying yang. The cost of living here is ridiculous! Hoping to relocate to TN in the next two years.

I hate the cold, I've always said I was born in, and continue to live in, the wrong latitude (although I've lived in the south and even further north in my adult life). I also LOVE the ocean, yet live in the middle of farmland. Palm trees over oak trees any day.

DH and I have talked often about where we'd like to "retire". With his job, he'll be able to retire in 8 years. His kids are in their 20's, my youngest is almost 17.

We have actually entertained becoming expats and moving to Mexico. We've looked at a couple of places when we've vacationed there, and surprisingly there are quite a few areas that are majority "American". Plus, the cost of living is lower, so retirement will go a long way.

Who knows...

I was born in California, went to graduate school there and spent most of my professional career there.

So glad to not be there anymore. Prices are off the chart. Vet shots 4x in CA vs AL. Home costs 4 to 5 x what happens in "middle America".

It was okay when I worked in CA and had a great salary - but now retired no way.

i'm jealous, echo! july is precisely when we head to the panhandle with the kids. it's about the same level of heat as at home, but much more enjoyable with sand, umbrella, and full cooler.

The first summer I thought I made a huge mistake moving here. It felt like turning the oven up to 500, opening the door and walking in. The second summer I didn't notice it. My blood really had thinned out. But if you enjoy 4 seasons, you wouldn't like it here. We only have two seasons: Snowbirds and no snowbirds. I've gotten to the point I like when the snowbirds go home, despite the heat, because of the decrease in traffic and immediate seating in restaurants. It works for me because I go up north several times in the winter, the snow is actually fun, then I can go home.

We just got back from 2 weeks on the big island Hawaii.

I could live there! The weather was perfect, sunny, a light breeze to cool you off and it there is only a 10 degree change between winter and summer.
Too bad it's so expensive. Oh and that crazy president you guys have.
