Sick Lizard......A little off topic!

Dawn-Moderator's picture

The things I do!!! Stepson's Gecko stopped eating. He hasn't eaten for quite awhile. My husband decided that Mr. Gecko needed to go to the vet. I called around until I found one in our area that would see a Gecko and made an appointment for him for last night.

Stepson and I took his Gecko to the vet. The vet decided that they were going to have to de-worm him (yuck!!) Also, he needed more humid air. If he doesn't start eating, he will have to go have blood tests somewhere else. A lizard specialist I guess.

So, $49 later, here I sit vaporizing and misting this lizard! Looking and hoping that the thing goes #2, which means he is eating! Wish me luck!

Dawn a.k.a the 'lizard nurse'..lol I'm an animal lover..so I know where your coming from. My daughter had a pet rat, looked just like a big fat grey sewer rat.... Actually SD stole him from a guy who was going to feed him to a snake as a baby-rat. The guy left the rat unattended in a little box when he went to the bathroom....so she grabbed it..ran out the door...and it landed at our house as daughters pet.

Three years later...He became sick, wasn't doing well, I held him on my lap for hours, kept him warm, scratched his ears (he loved having his ears scratched)...until he took his last breath.

I cried!!! Daughter cried!!! He has a lovely grave in the backyard..complete with a headstone & flowers..... Smile

You have a kind heart Dawn. I had lots of reptilian pets as a kid...snakes, hermit crabs, lizards. Hey, they need love too!

I am an animal lover myself and it sucks that we can't have pets where we live. The new place we are moving to won't even allow so much as a hamster! Then again I do have four little "animals" to look after so I have my hands full with them! lol

I think that is really sweet lovin life that you held him in his last moments...I don't think I could handle having a rat in the house though...you are a brave woman!

I've had hampsters.....I'd take a rat anyday!!! They are very social creatures...loved being brushed (baby brush) loved being scratched, cuddled, He would lick you when he greeted you ..like a dog. Never, ever bit anyone ever. I'm told you can teach them tricks... He had his cage. The dog was terrified of him..dog tried to steal rats food ond day..and rat lunged at him..scared the poo out of him..he never went near him again.. lol

I have more scars from my hampsters..... if you can get past the tail...rats really make wonderful pets. Becoming very popular pets around here!

I have to say that I used to be a breeder for a local pet shop. I've had numerious reptiles, and at the time, converted the garage into a breeding center for mice, rats, snakes, lizards, geckos, you name it... I've probably had it at one time or another... lol

I think it's great that you are taking care of this creature! My SD had a couple of hamsters, the first one "ran away" and to this day still thinks that he's somewhere sleeping under the house. lol. And the second one died, which my DH and SD blame my cat for... they both came from the same litter- the hamsters that is, and they got a cancer which killed them. But they try to blame my cat for it. The funny thing is that the cat was scared of them. We used to put them in those little balls and they would chase him all of the house, oh, he hated it.

We did end up taking the lizard to a reptile vet. We found out that "he" is a "she" which required a name change. We had x-rays taken and got more medicine and calcium for her. We put a lot of effort into trying to save her.

Good News!! She completely shed her skin (which is normal) and started eating a few days after that!! We were so excited! We went out and bought her a new cave and plant and she seems very happy(as happy as a Gecko can get).

I just wanted to share the good news!!

great to hear mr./ms. lizard is okay now... i love animals too, i only have fishes right now cause our condo does not allow us to have pets...even fishes but its a secret. my guppies are giving birth every month now days, i've already had 40 new fishes so far and more to come. i'll give them to the pet shop or if i can i'll sell them to the pet shop or get some kind of credit.

anyways, back to the lizard story. i remember my sister when my sister murdered my jackson chameleon, by leaving him out in the sun! i was so sad..

I am sitting with chico (the lizard) now, hoping that someone had an answer about why chico was/is so cold, and what to do to get him to eat. He is steel gray and so cold though there is a heating lamp in the cage....The crickets are chirping but he isn't eating. grrrr but these conversations if nothing else make me feel reasonably normal for caring about a lizard.

My green anoele lizard is barely crawling around and is resting on his back and barely breathing. Anything I can do right now?

My sons gecko is unresponsive and not eating. He has fresh crickets, fresh water and gecko food. He also has a heated rock and a light. Any suggestions?

that will see a reptile. You will probably need a stool sample and an x-ray. It could be something bacterial or a blockage. Also, make sure that he has enough moisture. Maybe he needs to shed his skin. Moisture will help this process. Get a squirt bottle and spray the cage with purified water.
