Ugh. Was going to blog a lovely, flowery post about how I spent 2 hours Skyping with SD22 today and how being a step really can work out sometimes. We talked about allll sorts of stuff, including taxes as she needs to file soon and can't until after her mother files.
:? Say what?
So, I told her she can do them on her own, her mother cannot claim her, and to call with questions.
She calls just a bit ago.
Seems she pulled last year's return to "go off of" and had questions because she didn't understand some of the numbers and schedules. (Schedules??)

SD worked in 2011 for her stepfather's shop... and he/BM did not give her a W2. They didn't even give her a 1099. (Legally, she was an EMPLOYEE, not a contractor, but that isn't even what has me pissed.)

THEY ASSIGNED A BUSINESS LOSS TO SD AND SHE HAD TO PAY TAXES ON IT!!!

AND...THEY HAD HER FILE FOR SELF EMPLOYMENT TAXES!!!

WTF!!

I'm fuming right now. Absolutely fuming. They required her to use their accountant (and of course she trusted her MOTHER) and they f'n assigned a business loss to SD!!!!!!!

I will most definitely be helping her file an amended return.

The self employment tax would have generated additional tax on her benefit. She did not receive a K-1. She wasn't a shareholder, contractor, or anything. She was an employee

Edit: they assigned business INCOME to SD...not a loss.

Damn how horrible for her. Hope she can file an amended return and everything works out so she doesn't end up having to pay!
