OT: Vegas or New Orleans?

zerostepdrama's picture

Which is better and why?

It would probably be just a 3 day trip. In end of March/early April.

If one is super expensive compared to one being super cheap, I would like to know that too.

Thanks!

I'd rather have a BioHo voodoo beeyotch. Soak it in alcohol, superglue its legs closed, pull out its hair...

notasm can give you excellent scoop on New Orleans. I don't know about Vegas myself, but I have many friends that love it. Perfect for a 3-day getaway.

I've only been to Vegas. I love it there. There's much more than just casinos. Plenty of outdoor activities like hiking trails and biking if you like those type of activities. Also the food is great.

I've been to Vagas, I wasn't that thrilled by it but you can get good hotel deals. If you want to stay in hotels and look around hotel/malls, go see some shows, do some gambling then it is the place for you. I think it is worth a trip once, just to see how bad it is. But I would love to try New Orleans, I think it would be so much more interesting and laid back than Vagas. My husband always says that Vagas sucks the soul out of you, whereas I would imagine that New Orleans would be a great place to put some back.

Well put!

You covered all the bases so well, notasm. New Orleans is one of my favorite places in the world. It is utterly unique with its own blend of cultures, religions, and cuisines. It's like Old Europe with Caribbean spice, and I adore the duality of it all. First rate museums & food (even the 2 am bar food is amazing), great music, art everywhere, and more history than you can shake a stick at.

Having worked in the gaming industry, I admit to having a bias against Vegas. I don't enjoy gambling or smoky casinos or the gridlocked traffic of the Strip. Old Vegas/Fremont Street is worth seeing though, and you can find more ways to stretch a dollar there.

Both places have a dark underbelly and crime. Both offer debauchery and excess, and both should probably be experienced at least once.

We used UBER all over New Orleans last week and it worked out great. Also, the WWII museum was phenomenal. Commanders Palace is over rated. PM me if you want the names of the restaurants we loved. We are foodies, so the whole trip was about the food.

NOLA hands down.

Everytime I go there, a little piece of me stays behind. Smile

MUST TRY-

Acme Oyster- garlic parm roasted oysters and shrimp po boy

There is a market near Harrah's and a small 5 seat stand that sells the best crab cake I've had in my life (the name has heart in it, but can't remember exact name)

Wander around the various districts, have bread pudding at the court of 3 sisters, then an afternoon hurricane at Pat O'Brians.

And i don't care how cliche it is- beignets at cafe du monde and a cold chicory.

Last time I saw New Orleans was 1992 - I was 16 and drunk every day. Bourbon Street did not care how old I was only that I had money to spend. Last time is was in LV was 2002. I thought it was very expensive.
Both cities are pretty loose. NOLA - ladies walking around topless, cross dressers in the women's bathroom, some shady people in the dark of the night.
LV - Not as shady but still very loose. IDC if they still can but every casino and establishment allowed smoking indoors.
Just my experience

Just did NOLA, fun time. Have done Vegas a ton. Both are ones that you can do once every five years. We stayed at the Saint in New Orleans and loved it. Lots of good restaurants there. Just found that the ones with the good reviews were not that great. Once without a ton of tourist reviews were fantastic.

Really depends on what type of entertainment you want.

I love NOLA. If you go there, stop by a little bar on Decatur St. called Claire's Pour House. Small dive bar, but a great place to have drinks. The owner Claire is awesome!
