Medical Insurance

Skids are on my medical insurance however, I am about to start a new job. DH is going to contact the lawyer to find out about what he needs to do in order to notify BM since she is high conflict he avoids her like the black plague. Do you think he should just send her a certified letter letting her know that the skids medical insurance will be terminating due to a job change and that he will let her know when the new insurance plan kicks in?

If the lawyer doesn't providr any helpful guidance, I'd just send her an email with read receipt and save your money. She's going to be mad and spout off whether she gets an email or certified letter, so I'd save my money.

What your DH should be asking the attorney is what he os required to do per CO to keep the kids covered. Can they go on BM's insurance for a month? Does he need to buy a private plan or pay for COBRA?

Actually, since it is only for 30 days, can you all afford a month of COBRA and then just let BM know when insurance changes? If you can afford it, I'd almost go that route versus getting BM riled up, having to find/buy new insurance for 30 days, getting BM letters so she can add the kids to her insurance in the interim, wondering if your DH will have to pay for her premium increase, etc.

Eck.

I've used Humana before for short-term insurance. They weren't horribly priced, and I had it mainly for catastrophic/sick care. It still sucked to pay - I think $350 for XH and I about 6 years ago - but I was glad to have it on the ofd chance something would happen.

There is no way we are signing up for COBRA it's $2700 a month. I start my new job on 8/20 and they told me the insurnace will kick in 30 days. I asked HR if the insurace will terminate on 8/17 or the end of the month. I am just waiting.

So, your insurance should be good through the end of the month. When the new company tells you yours is good after 30 days- that really means the 1st of the month following 30 days.

If you start at the new company today, you would not get insurance until October 1st. You will be covered by your old company through the end of this month. It would just be September that you would be without.

So there are bridge policies that you need to probably get for that month. Find a insurance broker that is licensed with the ACA (obama care). They can get you one of those policies- the last person I know to get one was for 2 months and it was only $275 for the family per month. This is catasrophic coverage only. BM needs to know that she can't make normal doctor appointments while on a bridge plan.

If DH is required to carry the insurance (even if that is through you) you need to do something like this. Plus, it would protect you guys in the case of an accident or something!

If your DH is required to provide health insurance for the kids then he needs to figure out what his options are for coverage,  You already know COBRA is pricey but he may be able to find a plan for them that will cover just that one month (or whatever the exact time is) for a lot less.  Years ago, I had one of those policies when I graduated college but hadn't started my real job yet.

One thing to consider is that if the kids need any routine/covered by insurance stuff like physicals for school or vaccines... BM needs to know so that if possible those appts can happen before your insurance goes away.. or so they can wait until after your new policy kicks in.  This means that somehow your DH probably does need to tell her about this.  Even if he buys a gap policy.. it's likely to be something with a high deductible so things like that might cost you out of pocket even with insurance.

With those kid's history, I wouldn't want to chance not having coverage because something is bound to happen and the S-storm that blows in when BM finds out the kids have no insurance??? not good.  Especially if the CO requires that he provide it (whether it's via your job.. it's all the same really)  I carried my SD's on my Ins and it was a big savings.

Why doesnt BM who must be mother of the year to have custody, WHY doesnt she have her kids covered by medical insurance.

It's just down right wrong that ncp's mostly dads, pay out the ass in cs AND are ordered to pay health insurance.

I feel awful for any of you in this mess.
