Proud of DH: working ss14 today

step off already's picture

Dh is redoing the dog run today and enforcing the gate because ss's dog is a powerful brut and a baby and will rip through anything when he's nervous. (My beautiful front door is a victim of the dog's anxiety as well).

We've been having ss (and my bios when they are here with him) walk the dogs both in the morning and evening. Ss puts up a fight and will try to get away with a 7 min walk but for the most part all are benefitting from the responsibility and exercise.

Last night dh told ss not to stay up too late because they'd be working together in the morning. At 8 am dh asked ss if he wanted to go with him to Home Depot. Ss said no. Dh then said , "when. Get back, you're going to have to help me". Ss said "why". Dh gave an answer regarding ss's dog.

I ended up going with dh to Home Depot and said the correct answer to ss's question was, "because I said so".

Dh made a few excuses that it would be easier to do it on his own. Ss would just slow the project down, ss is so lazy and useless anyway.... Blah blah bah.

I reminded dh, that the reason we have kids do chores and projects is to teach them responsibility, give them a sense of accomplishment and get them out from behind a tv/video game screen.

I left and went shopping with the baby.

When I returned, dh came up to me snickering. "I'm working the hell out of him".

Good! Kids SHOuLD be doing this kind of stuff. He's 14 ffs and he is fully capable of helping you with fencing and trimming weeds. Sheesh.

... Still I'm proud. and it's three hours later and they're still out there.

Don't these men see that often the only reason the kids take so long is because they know the adult will take over and do it faster? So whine a little, drag your feet a little, mess something up a little and Daddio will take over and SS/BS/SD/BD slides back into bed or in front of the computer.

Biological kids are just as bad as stepkids and my ex fell for it every single time... "It is faster for me to do it." Geez!

Ok. So three hours in and it's lunchtime. Ss came in and headed upstairs. I went outside and asked dh if I could make him some lunch. He appreciated it and said yes. He told me he wanted to do the roof tonight and head back to Home Depot and that ss went in for water cuz he was looking pretty torn up. Lol.

I go back inside to start lunch. I hear the shower up stairs.

Dh comes in and calls ss down for lunch. I tell him he's in the shower.

When ss finally comes down, dh tells ss "I don't know why you took a shower and changed. We have a lot more work to do. "

Ss is now changing out of his sandals and jeans and putting his work clothes back on.

Nice yet kid.

So proud if dh. (Yes dh, to answer your question earlier this morning, we can do it tonight Lol

Oh. It gets better. In case you forgot, my ss is "duck face".

So they are going back to Home Depot so duck face saunters back upstairs to change into a fancy outfit "because he's going to the store". 15 minutes later he comes downstairs in new black skinny jeans, white converse and a nice new hat.

Dh is pissed. To say the least. Ss tries to defend himself stating he needs to dress for the store. Oh he'll no, ss. It's Home Depot. I guarantee there will not be a 14 year old for you to look good for.
