OT: awful issues with blushing/flushing and hot flashes since hysterectomy! Help?!?!

Oh Margie's picture

Ok guys, here's the thing. I have always run "hot", I have always been a huge blusher. But not in the cute, rosy cheeked way that you might be pictruing. The slightest bit of emotion, whether it be happiness or excitement or anger or even mild surprise (for example if someone comes up to my desk to talk to me and I don't feel completely "prepared" for it) cause me to flush an awful, blotchy, purplish red colour on my face, neck, chest and upper arms.

Obviously, a lot of this is tied to my anxiety as well, and of course, the more I think about it and feel embarrassed about it the more easily it happens. It definitely affects my daily life; if I am feeling like I am having a "flushy' day I will avoid going to lunch with people or talking to people. I will try to hide, basically.

A few months ago, at the age of 42 I had a full hysterectomy, so obviously, that's not helping things. Even with hormone replacement therapy my hot-flashes, flushing and blushing are out of control. Every conversation I have now, no matter how minor or casual results in me flushing straight to the roots of my hair. It's miserable.

I have done all the common sense things. Have had my thyroid tested over the years, I try to avoid caffeine and when I do have a coffee or tea I make sure it's iced. I drink TONS of ice water during the day, I dress in easily removable layers. I accept that i will sweat my ass off when I drink wine or eat spicy foods. I am trying lots of biofeedback to deal with my anxiety.

It's not the hot flashing when I'm on my own that bothers me, as crappy as is to try and sleep in a river of sweat. It's the flushing in public, to the point where I can't even ask someone where the bathrooms are, that's making me nuts.

Does anyone have any tips or remedies or advice?????????

look into bio-identical hormone pellets.

I had a hysterectomy when I was 43 and was amazed at how quickly menopause came screaming in.

Bio-identicals saved my life Smile

I get the pellets inserted subcutaneously in my buttocks - love them!!!

OP - look into it. Seriously!!!

I am using Estrogel, is that the same thing??? I notice a huuuuuge difference with it, things would be so much worse without. I ran out the other day and was absolutely miserable for 24 hours.

Thanks Ladies Smile

I feel you - I also have always "run hot." Just like you, the least bit of any kind of emotion makes me flush. Have you been to a dermatologist to see if you have rosacea? It effects everyone differently but always causes some kind of flushing. It might be worth a try.

It sounds like you are doing everything you can to deal with it. If it is any consolation, I flush less and less the older I get. I haven't changed anything and I still have social anxiety - but the flushing is way better then it was when I was younger.

I had a complete hysterectomy at 35 and immediately went into menopause. I use a
.025 mg Estradoil patch which is synthetic. It really helped me with the hot flashes and continues to help with sleep. I use Estrace, which is a cream form of Estradoil, vaginally for atrophy. Hopefully the bio-identicals will work for you.

I also vote for bioidenticals. Took me awhile to find a gynocologist who would prescribe them. I live between two medium sized cities. I did enter complete meno by age 51. The insomnia was also killer. Melatonin, ear plugs and bioidenticals were a life saver.
