And yet more dental care for SD6

Learning to Stepparent's picture

SD6 is with BM out west visiting BM's family right now. BM called DH on Saturday and told him that SD "slightly" chipped a tooth when a storm door swung back and hit her in the face and wanted to know when SD's next dentist appointment was so it could be checked out.

Ummm......her next dental appointment is actually in a little over a month but given her other dental problems why on earth would you wait? We have no idea how bad the chip is, haven't seen a picture or anything. DH told BM that she needed to take SD to a dentist out there to get it checked out.

Apparently BM called her dentist here to find out if she could get an appointment when they got back (not SD's dentist, BM's dentist) but that dentist was out of town so she managed to find a dentist where they are that will see SD. The dentist out west needs a copy of SD's most recent x rays which is no big deal, we had the pediatric dentist send them out. I am curious what this dentist will say when he sees the two root canals, 17 filled cavities, 5 steel caps, and at least one untreated cavity in the 6 year olds mouth.

Hopefully the chip isn't too bad and is in a baby tooth but who knows. I know that sometimes you can tap a tooth just right and it will break but I do find it odd that a screen door hit SD in such a way that a tooth would chip. Who knows.

:jawdrop:

so, she has fillings in just about every tooth in her mouth?? What in the actual f*ck???

Probably. Everyone was giving SD a bottle until she was 3 because she would scream if you gave her a cup instead. They finally got her off the bottle shortly after her third birthday. I know BM was giving her all kinds of pop and juice and SD refused to drink regular milk so they were giving her vanilla soy milk and would often put it in a bottle or sippy cup and send her to bed with it. We no longer give her anything but water or regular white milk but BM still gives her juice and god knows what all else despite us having told her the dentist said not to. How the lot of them got away without being reported to CPS for child neglect I will never understand. The first 11 cavities had to be done under general anesthesia when SD was 3 1/2. That is pathetic. Unless there is some sort of genetic or medical problem causing them like no enamel on her teeth they should be embarrassed at the state of that childs teeth. Hell, she isn't even my kid and I'm embarrassed.

SD has said before that if she eats a good breakfast BM gives her a sucker.

Yes, the dental problems are DH's fault as well. The bottom line is no one wanted to do any actual parenting and just did whatever was easiest. He is doing his best to keep her teeth as healthy as possible from now on but the damage is pretty much done. We are hopeful the adult teeth won't be affected as they come in but we aren't sure yet.

I'm also curious why the dentist needs x rays to see if a chipped tooth needs repair. It's a chip, you can see it with the naked eye.

That makes sense about the x rays. I'm not sure what the last set is supposed to tell him. It's not as if BM is transferring regular dental care to this practice, it's just an emergency out of town thing.

Don't know as BM didn't even have a practice or dentist name for the receptionist at the pediatric dentists office. However, they are digital x rays so no worries there.

That is insane! How horrible for that little girl.

Did BM drink while pregnant? One of the side effects of FAS is no enamel. A friend of ours adopted and baby that had no enamel and ended up with full caps at 16 or 17.

That is a question we have asked many times.

BM says no but other people say yes, she did. It may have all been before she knew she was pregnant but apparently she was quite far along, like 4 months, before she knew and we have been told she really tied one on a few times during that period.

I have wondered before if SD didn't have mild FAS. It would explain several of her issues. It is something we will bring up with the psychologist when we get her evaluated.

I am going to bookmark this so I can reference it the next time I feel like b*ching about SD'S dental woes.

I do not understand this at all.
