Bleeding Gums

SS11 has gingivitis, which the doctor identified at his annual physical. He’s got an appointment with the dentist this week – this should be interesting.

The doctor recommended gargling with a peroxide and water solution once a day. So DH was on him all weekend to brush and gargle.

But really what good will it do?

SS11’s with BM all this week and weekend. I overheard SS11 on the phone with BM telling her he’s not going to gargle at her house cause it hurts. And since SS11 is the baby and BM wants to be his friend I’m pretty sure BM won’t force the issue.

This is an ongoing issue with SS11 over the last 8 years. SS11 doesn’t like to brush. He doesn’t like toothpaste - says it’s “too spicy.” Over the years DH and I have bought a bunch of different toothpastes for him and SS11 doesn’t like any of them.

SS11 comes over with bad breath and food stuck to his front teeth. DH yells at SS11 and the cycle repeats itself the next time he’s with us, nothing changes.

I used to try to help DH and remind SS11 to brush and monitor SS11’s brushing, but I stopped when DH told me I was being too harsh on SS11 by telling SS11 he needed to brush longer and use more toothpaste or his teeth would rot and fall out. DH never bothered to step in and take care of his own son’s dental health.

Oh and BM told SS11 he didn’t have to use toothpaste as long as he brushes; only BM “forgot” to tell DH about this. So SS11 over the paste 3 years SS11 has had numerous cavities filled. I think it was like 4 the last time he was at the dentist (6 months ago).

I know; there's a tube of un-used infant toothpaste sitting in our medicine cabinet right now.

At BM's house it's well water so no flouride treated water the majority of the time. Our water is flouride treated and DH has a flouride rinse for SS11.

BM tends to say one thing and do another. She says he's brushing twice a day and using a flouride rinse.

SS11 told DH he doesn't brush unless he's told to do so and BM doesn't tell him to brush everyday.

I can relate. SS12 came back from summer vacay at his mom's declaring that he hadn't brushed his teeth at all in 9 weeks. When I asked him how he could go that long without brushing his teeth, he said that he just forgot because no one reminded him like at home.
