"Family" Christmas Card

still learning's picture

Not sure if this has been blogged about yet, just wondering what your thoughts are?  Too much too soon, or What a wonderful blended family!  They're already calling themselves a family.  I think it's telling how the daughter is front and center, a hand of each of daddy's legs, and edging step girlfriend out of the photo.  Did any of you take "family" Christmas photos with your then bf and skids after 6 months?

and consider myself extremely UNphotogenic, unlike Chef with his naturally perfectly straight teeth.  However,

In the early days Chef took a photo with skids and Santa at the mall. (year one of separation and divorce foot dragging) They must have been horribly traumatized by the breakup (TM)

All three were mugging for the camera, making faces or with shit eating grins whilst Chef had this perpetual look of melancholy due to sobbing for two straight weeks over "losing" his children earlier that year; the same children who would soon collectively give him the middle finger.

I was purposely left out and became the designated bag and coat holder while he spent a good deal of my pay guilty daddy shopping.

Oh whatever WAS I thinking???!!!!

What were you thinking???!!! I know we can all look back and say that about ourselves at one time or another. In retrospect it sounds like you're glad you weren't in that early photo.  I don't race to get into photos w/skids or gskids.  Nothing against anyone, it's just that I don't feel like I have to solidify the relationship with a picture and then post it to prove something. We only have one big family photo that was done at MIL's request.

Whenever I check the news some celebrity stuff pops up. The stories that involve step issues are always interesting.  It'll be interesting to see how this pans out.

Given that the BM is the situation is already re-married with a new baby, I guess they were both ready to move on! I personally think it is way to soon for a photo like that and agree with your assessment of the body language.

It's funny how we see that picture. SM being pushed aside. SD front and center LOOK AT ME. IM THE MOST IMPORTANT.

The girlfriend might be being pushed aside, but it's by her own boyfriend, not the daughter. He's got his arm around his daughter, with his hand on her leg. Girlfriend has her hand on top of the boyfriend's, trying to be a part of this family. Professionally posed or not, it looks like a dad + kids photo (he's got both arms around his kids), and the girlfriend as an afterthought. She might as well have been photoshopped in.

She might as well have been photoshopped in.

omigod, you are so right!  Body language expert right here.

It's a publicity shot, so I'm not putting any stock into it. A professional photographer posed them that way. The manager said "this will get views for you both, and maybe even an interview". Everyone smiled their fakest smile. I've seen that picture at least a hundred times in L.L. Bean catalogues.

Its funny though that even though its a staged pose, we SMs see a snotty snotty SD and a SM being pushed aside.

I don't see that at all. I see cute blond kid front and center because that will grab views. Dad, GF, and son (no one even mentioned him) are all in the background. If the little girl were a brunette, GF would be up front because blonds and redheads grab views.

Im sure she's a sweetheart,  give her some time though.  And wait until daddy remarries and doesn't take her on the honeymoon.

Lol if you watch the housewives of OC, Vicki's newest victim err fiance was posing for a family photo and even stated "Put me where it's easiest to cut me out later" lol!

Looks like daddys hand is on the SD's knee and then the GF's hand is placed on her BF's hand....that says it all. Symbolism, Princess first , GF second(like the GF is saying "hey what about me" LOL). Just my humble opinion.

I noticed that too, like the GF doesn't even get to touch her BF, she has to go "through" the territorial SD.

The little girl will definitely be calling the shots.

My thought is...ugh more pushing of the happy blended family/skid first narrative.

That's all.

Ew, that guy is such a douche. I wish her well, but the fact that she refers to them as a family already is icky. And it's way too early to be having professional "family" photos taken of them all together. I didn't even arrange to take family photos after we were married until we had DD (so... almost 6 years into our relationship).

Same here.  It was about 6 years into it before we did a big family portrait for MIL.

I think taking a "family" photo for a Christmas card, when you've been dating for less than 6 months is risky at best.

Also, the new girlfriend looks like a tanner version of the ex wife.

I have never wanted to take family photos with DH and SKs...it could be because I don't like portraits to begin with, but it's also because honestly, I don't feel like we are a "family". I see SSs 4 days a month, max, and they are pretty alienated, so we all walk on eggshells when they are around. Taking a fun and happy Christmas photo would feel disingenuous to me.
