Marathon IEP's make my mind ache

SS11's IEP meeting was yesterday and -excuse me whike i get bragadocious for a sec but we have worjed our tail feathers off with this kid-despite stellar grades and great behavior SS is doing extended school year again this year because we made BIG gains this school year and are looking at making the push to close the reading grade level gap over the summer with ESY and help from my BFF who just so happens to be a literacy specialist.

It sucks he's going to have another month of school this summer but this window isn't the kind that just hangs open.

BM of course didn't attend and has no idea about anything but she did call to promise SS11 that they will go to the Bronx Zoo for his birthday. Suuuuuuuure. You can't afford to drive 45 minutes to see your son but you can afford a 5 hour trip through traffic hell or a train that's $100 one way? Doubt it.

I'll never understand why she tries to do this to him. She is the reason deadbeat dad pages make my blood boil.

Congratulations. IEP's, more so than 504's, can be exhausting I would guess.

Just for a Fed(504)situation, I spent so much time trying to foresee what my BS might need, and how to express it to the Powers-That-Be in a manner that encouraged them to help without overwhelming them with requirements. I remember showing up with a 'chair' that I had built out of 2x4's. It was a simple "T" shape with brackets. Rubber sit balls were not working or encouraged, but this was a more stationary option which provided sensory input.... they looked at me as if I was an axe-wielding alien.

Early intervention is the key. I spent thousands out of my retirement account when BS was young because he needed help right then and I figured that I had the rest of my life to work. Alphabet soup. Dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, ADHD, VPD SPD, APD and the kid failed spectacularly every grade til I pulled him to homeschool in 4th grade. Huge intervention year, but it was worth it. Boy is now passing 9th grade with limited support.

Ex-DH thought that I made everything up and the doctors and specialists were just looking for money. (Nothing wrong with his sperm or heir.) Thankfully, I think we are at a point where BS is managing his own education --- self-advocacy is still troublesome, but he is passing his classes on his own and has joined a local search-and-rescue squad.

Kudos to you for good grades and good behavior. Glad that SS is doing so well.

EDIT: BS could not read in 4th grade. Now he is main-stream high school functional.

Thanks guys Smile

It really is just exhausting.

And to sweeten the pot SO is now a fully benefitted electrician with a sizable company. Happened the same day as SS's IEP. I'm happy to see my boys doing so well. Smile

We've busted rear from this time last year when the IEP meeting was immediately followed by SO's grandma's hospitalization and eventually passing, the car trying to kill me and the lapsed insurance predicament from hell.

We're still in the hole, but we're climbing.

Big fat jug of wine for me this weekend Smile
