OT: what a difference a boss makes

ITB2012's picture

Same company, different bosses. Previous boss had 100% trust in me. Sometimes it felt overwhelming but I met that level of trust. Current boss seems to have 0% trust in me (and not much more in others) and unfortunately I feel myself affected by it. I'm starting to feel like I shouldn't try so hard if I'm just going to be second guessed and overridden. And I'm not a fledgling newbie in a low responsibility/low accountability position.

I'm not sure how long you have had to work under the new boss.  Sometimes people tend to micromanage more at first until they have a handle on who can and cannot be trusted to get the job done.

I might work more in a direction of asking the new boss to help you understand their thought process.  I know I have gotten in pickles with new management in the past because they want to put their own stamp on things and don't like hearing "we did it this way in the past".

I am actually in a bit more of a reverse situation.. my current boss is pretty hands off with us.. while our prior manager would get more involved in questioning us and our decisions.  For the most part we have been doing this job for almost 15 years.. so I guess at this point our opinions and decisions are fairly well trusted.

Is your current boss new to the post or is it you who's new to the post? Either way, give it time. Usually things settle down a bit once you've shown them that you're perfectly capable of doing not just a job, but a good one.

I've been in this role for a couple of years, before the new boss. This boss has been around for two years. I'm finding out that others are having them same experience regardless of years in their roles.

I left my last job because of this, essentially.  Just crazy management/directors in place over the past 1.5 years was killing the morale in that department.  So now I have a new job, same place just a different department with, IMHO a really good manager.  And it's a WORLD of difference in my life.  I have it back!

Note:  that department lost a lot of experienced people, except 2, in one year.  I think something like over 5 left in 6 months, and three of us w/in a month of each other.

Took four of us to quit out of a five person team (not including the manager) within a six month period for them to do anything.

That says it all really! Shame it has to come to that before they take action.

I'm currently struggling under both managers in the department I work in.  One didn't hide the fact that she was a militant power hungry biznatch.  She's off on "garden" leave, thank fark.  The other one is a snake in sheeps clothing.  Luckily the managers above her know what she's like and is on my side.  I hate either situation.  It's stressful, I just want to go to work and do my job without b.s. games.

Like the saying goes - most people do not leave bad jobs, they leave bad management.

Over the last two years I've been marginalized, given way more responsibiltity yet fewer tools to do the job than Retired Dude had.  And now I"m told no raise either.

I'm starting to "phone it in" until my retirement which is in 1 yr and 3 mos.  I think I saw the clock move BACKWARDS the other day!
