SD16 Car-what is fair as far as paying

HappyCow's picture

DH and I have decided that we are going to buy SD16 a car. Nothing expansive we are thinking at the most $5000. We just want something with reasonable miles on it and that can get her safely to work, school, practice and back. She gets no say in the car. I personally think an old school crown Vic would serve her well. That way if she hits a tree she will probably just bounce off of it. Smile

I think it is reasonable that she pay part of her insurance every month, her own gas, minor repairs and oil changes on it.

We are going to have SD16 sign a contract once we decide on the conditions. We also want to throw in other factors such as no one else drives the car, no friends in the car, etc.

What are your suggestions?

"No friends in the car" is the kiss of death for a teenager... and will be the rule she breaks right off the bat. ALL teenagers with cars end up picking up/going out with friends.

I would set a limit on friends (example no more than 1, or no boys)
Yes the kid can pay for her own gas and insurance.
As for oil changes... honestly you might want to handle those. I remember as a teen skipping an oil change because that $15.99 could be better used going to the movies or the mall!! If you and DH take responsibility for the cost of the oil change you have a better chance of it getting done and the $$ you spent on the car not being wasted (due to a blown engine in a matter of months).

Watch car auctions, typically police departments sell their old vehicles at the auctions... high mileage, but professionally maintained and upkept!

No one in the car with her. Here in GA they can not have anyone in the car until they have had their license 6 mos. Our rule is grades must be B average and they pay for gas. We pay for everything else. I believe they have a part time job, but school is their focus. My kids never broke those simple rules.
