Kids Braces

AshMar654's picture

Ok just need feedback as I am trying to figure out the best option. DS11 soon to be 12 needs braces and apparently is a candidate for Invisalign. What is anyone's experience with those with kids vs. regular braces?

Please let me know if the kids were responsible with them. Did they lose them all the time? Did they forget to always put them back in?

I'm not familiar with these, but if it's something he can take out or refuse to wear, I think you'll have the same struggles with them as you do the allergy meds. I would opt for the "permanent" braces that can only be removed by the dentist.

What percentage do you have to pay in all of this? Candidate or not, those are hella-expensive. I wouldn't be willing to cough up that for kids braces. To me, that is something you do as an adult on your own.

The price is the same for both. There is no difference. We have to pay for either in full.

But SS was a candidate.  HCBM *really* wanted him in them, presumably because they're fancier and she thinks they're a status symbol.  For him, the price was the same, so we had him investigate them as options.  He chose traditional braces (much to his mother's chagrin) because he was really concerned about only having the trays out for a couple hours a day.  He was realistic about his need to snack throughout the day.

Bio-DD, who finished with her braces a year and a half ago, had friends who did Invisalign and hated it.  One of her buddies' sister had it and HATED it.  It was more painful than she expected and there was a lot of drool were the comments we got.

I had them as a young adult. I can't speak from a kids point of view so you'll have to look at your child and speak with your dentist to find out if they are appropriate.

That being said I LOVED them.

1. Hygiene is 100 times easier. You take them out to eat and you can brush your teeth 100% normal. No issues with food getting stuck and needing special tools / more time to clean. I would have 100% failed to keep normal braces clean.

2. No teasing. The world is mean. No matter how much we get onto kids metal mouth is still bullying that happens.

3. Cost was no different for me. I repeat they were the exact same price as traditional braces if not cheaper because I didn't have to drive to the office every two weeks to have them adjusted. They gave me a few sets at a time and id see them every 6 to 8 weeks. Less having to take off work.

That being said. Yes kids can use them and some cases aren't appropriate for invisaline. This is where you have to work with your dentist and know your kid.

I had regular braces in middle school and got them off beginning of HS. Even then, I didn't wear my retainer consistently like I was supposed to and had to get a permanent retainer placed on my teeth because they were shifting. I feel MOST kids are generally this unresponsible. Don't get the Invisalign

Everyone I know who has had Invisalign has had to wear them for much longer than initially quoted. This usually means the cost is higher than. Initially thought too. The issue is people take them out while you can't do that with traditional braces so they stick to the schedule much better.

You dont pay extra if it takes longer? Its one cost for the entire process the same as traditional braces.

Maybe I am thinking of the additional services, like filing teeth to be straight and whitening that happens after those nubbins are removed and leave stains.

I had braces so I know what goes along with them. I will say I never had to get my teeth whitened or anything after I got mine off. I brushed with really well with whitening tooth paste the whole time I had them. I do not see that being an issue as I will make sure DS uses a whitening tooth paste as well.

We already know he will have to have two teeth capped after he gets them off.

My kid lost/misplaced one or part of his retainer several times after getting braces removed. It was $125 a pop to replace each time.  In hindsight I wish we had done the permanant retainer.  For a kid I'd recommend whatever would be the least amount of work for them and you.  If the kid is extremely responsible and really cares about oral hygeine then it's probably fine but for most kids may be forgetful or irresponsible.

For a kid I would say no, they have to take them out anytime they eat or drink...do you trust your SS to keep track of those things every time he takes them out? "Oops sorry mom and dad I wrapped them up in a napkin and forgot where I put them." That's a couple grand gone, and you have to pay for the replacements. Plus they have to brush after eating each time and putting them back in. Also they can be really hard to get on and off when you first start using them. Personally for kids braces are the way to go in my opinion. But make sure they get the permanent retainer, I didn't do this with BS and his teeth went crooked within six months after treatment...he never wore his retainers which were invisaligns.
