It's essentially when someone
It's essentially when someone tries to convince you that something that is true, is not in fact, true, and that you are crazy for believing it to be true.
An example might be pointing out to someone what they said or did and them replying by saying, "I never said or did that." Oftentimes, followed by, "I didn't do that, you did that!"

Seems I have been a victim of gaslighting more than I car to admit. DH's ex is definitely the Queen of Gaslighting.
Check out the 1944 movie
Check out the 1944 movie "Gaslight" with Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer. Her husband tries her drive her insane by making her doubt her own perceptions. One of the things he does is to cause the "gaslights" in the house to dim and lighten with no apparent reason. It is a good movie.
