What is the point of grades?

CompletelyPuzzled's picture

DH just attended a meeting at SD12's school with BM to discuss her performance. The kid failed 4 out of 6 classes last semester and is currently failing 5 out 6 classes this time. She will only be in school for another 2 weeks. The principal told them that there is no way that SD12 will not be able to pull three of the grades up to passing, because they are so low. She has 42 missing assignments. DH wanted to have her held back as she failed a majority of her classes every single semester. She has passed 5 out of 18 classes all year. BM wouldn't agree so the principal told DH that he is going to be forced to move her to the next grade. He can only hold her back if both parents agree. How can you fail 3/4 of your classes and still be passing. It makes no sense!!!

SD12 passed 3 of those classes while she was living with us. But, she ended up going back to BM after she ran away and got violent. BM doesn't make her go to school and truancy is involved. BM doesn't parent her and is more concerned with being her friend. Even though she doesn't live with DH, he has been working with the school about her academics. BM refused to talk to the school until today. She knew DH was pushing for them to hold her back so BM showed up to this one meeting. She missed 3 other conferences. And you know what makes it worse, SD12 has failed math every semester and she is in advanced math. So she isn't even remedial.

wow. That is crazy. So are they thinking they'll just push her along and deny her a diploma at high school graduation time? SD16 at 12 did very poorly and she got to take no elective or fun classes whatsoever while her sister got to take drama and agriculture classes. She had to take remedial everything.

could you (dh) contact someone in the school system's administrative office?

At that age and grade level it is very common. Unfortunately it sets the stage for disaster once the kid reaches high school where seat time and credits are REQUIRED to graduate.

does your district have summer school?

HA! That would be the loathsome manual labour which we all know that skids will NOT do.

No, more like a career in welfare queendom as a GUBM.

What is it with step kids and manual labor? My SS25 is adamantly against anything remotely resembling manual labor and as a result is a dainty man-child who can't swing a hammer and refuses to get his hands dirty. He comes from such a hard working family too so I don't get it. His grandfather and uncle are both in construction and DH owns his own business, which technically is manual labor also, but he makes a very good living and could easily get the currently unemployed SS set up in the same business, but it's "too much work" so he won't do it. I honestly don't know what kind of job he thinks he can get with no college degree and no experience in anything but one field that he doesn't want to do anymore. I swear I think he is still waiting for a job that will pay him to sit on his ass and do nothing and/or play video games to fall into his lazy lap.

Same thing happened to Chef. The school administrators told him outright that as the NCP, the CP's opinion takes precedent (even though he had joint legal, which isnt worth the paper its written on here in NYS)

The Girhippo protested tearfully against holding Dominatrix back because, and I quote, "What about her frrrriiiiieeeeennnnnnnddddddddddsdsssss????!!!!"

Which she doesnt have anyway because she's a bully.
