Well, she got what she wanted!

Calypso1977's picture

attention whore SD14 got her braces on that she sooo wanted. (they were indeed medically necessary, but initially we thought they werent and of course SD wanted them because they are a fashion accessory and everyone has them).

3 days in and she's already bitching and complaining on her twitter feed about them. given the messed up state of her teeth she is scheduled to have them on for 3 years.

im sure she will be a real treat to be around on sunday.

I'll be able to relate soon. PrincASS15 supposedly needs braces (I and all my siblings had them and his teeth don't look that bad to me, but what do I know). This poor wittle boy has such a tender mouth, he's going to be in a world of hurt. This is the little princess boy whose mouth hurts from eating crackers. Not because he stuffs in 6 at a time but because the crackers are just MEAN. Braces these days are a walk in the park compared to the medievel stuff used back in my day. They should be so lucky they aren't wearing a full metal jacket around each tooth!

Aniki-Moderator's picture

Yes that's PrincASS15! He also whined because the dog (big ol meanie) breathed on him. This is the boy who wants to be a jarhead just like my DH. He couldn't be a jarhead cheerleader! Bahahahahaaaaaaaaa!!!

Aniki-Moderator's picture

But Cap'n Crunch is teeny little pieces and the only way PrincASS15 could get enough in his gaping maw to hurt his wittle mouth, he'd have to use a soup ladle! Ssssshhhh....don't want to give him any ideas on how to cram MORE food in that piehole...

BM supposedly promised to get HHB braces. In her case, they ARE only for cosmetics. A few years ago we had our dentist give his opinion, and his opinion was to wait for her wisdom teeth. HHB has spaces between her teeth because the teeth are a little small. Our dentist thinks it is highly likely that the wisdom teeth will push everything forward, and thus take care of the spacing. Not to mention, we will not know until that time if the wisdom teeth will overcorrect the spacing any, meaning, she will just need to get things adjusted again if they do.

But like I said, BM PROMISED the girl braces! Of course, that was before her latest trouble. After having to help pay for her little incident (which BM's share will be $500), BM may think again. She may decide that putting money into a savings account to cover future HHB stupidity is more in order than buying cosmetic braces! Let's not forget how much BM is having to dish out for color guard!

IF the girl ever gets braces, she will be moaning and groaning and missing school...this I can promise! BD23 had to have braces...which of course BM makes sure to bring up to DH every chance she gets (because HHB told her BD23 had braces when she was younger, and tries to use this for ammo). What neither BM nor HHB get is that 1) BD23 had a problem where her baby teeth would not come out, forcing her permanent teeth sideways when they came in, so she was eating on the sides of her teeth and this caused terrible pain...not to mention, the wear it would have caused if they stayed that way; and 2) I PAID for BD23 to have braces while I was still a single mom....before DH and I ever married!! DH did not contribute at all to BD23's braces, so using that as a basis for why HHB should have braces is total bull! That said, when BD23 had her braces, she never felt well after an adjustment...and my daughter can take some pain. And that was just pulling the teeth to sit upright! Pulling teeth together would surely cause pain, and if HHB gets so much as the sniffles, or stays up too late the night before, she tries to get the day off from school, and whines and cries she doesn't feel well!

Regarding the wisdom tooth thing... my dentist said the same thing when I was an early teen. (I also wanted braces because of spaces between my teeth. I think it looks weird. Lol So also "cosmetic" for me!) Anyway, in my case the dentist was totally wrong. The wisdom teeth did nothing for the spaces. (I had to have one pulled and one surgically removed - and mine didn't come in until I was in my thirties.) Wisdom teeth don't always come in where or how you expect (it actually seems like they *usually* don't come in where or how you'd expect, given how many people have to have them removed!), so I'm personally leery of that "wait for the wisdom teeth" excuse.

I still don't like the gaps in my teeth, but now I feel "too old" for braces. (Yes, I know I'm not, but it's how I feel!) Wish I'd been able to get them corrected as a teen....

CantKeepDoingThis's picture

But that is just the point. The wisdom teeth could do nothing, they could push the teeth forward, they could even overcorrect. That is the point our dentist is making. HHB doesn't have any real reason to get braces other than cosmetics...getting rid of spaces. If she gets them corrected now, and the wisdom teeth do something really screwy, then she has to get them corrected yet again.

Many kids, especially girls, hate something they don't like about themselves these days. If NCPs cave to being forced to pay for things that aren't necessary, where does it end? 15-year-olds who don't like their nose, and think it is their parents' responsibility to get them a nose job? Teen girls who don't want to get off their back side and quit eating junk food thinking it is their parents' responsibility to get them lipo? I mean, where would it end?

BS20's wisdom teeth need to be removed as they are coming in wonky...causing pain and other problems. Think I would be more inclined to find money for that in our household budget before HHB getting braces...and not because it is my bio, but because his is a real problem! DH has work he still has to get done to his teeth that we can only afford to do a little at a time...old fillings that are coming out and causing further corroding of the tooth thus requiring him to now get the tooth fully capped. THIS is more important than HHB getting braces...he has teeth in his head literally falling apart! BS20's teeth are crowded and crooked...he could care less about braces. Sure, he is a guy, but crowding causes more issues than spaces...and looks equally as bad if not worse in many cases. I have crowding from when my wisdom teeth came in...spots I can't floss because there is just no way the floss will go between the teeth they are so tight against each other. If I could ever get them fixed, it would be nice...but more so my hygienist wouldn't have to dig so bad at those spots every cleaning. So my teeth aren't perfect! Big deal! I don't let it define me! I don't let it stop me from smiling! How much money you spend to change things about yourself should not be a measure of one's beauty...and unfortunately, society these days is sending quite a different message.

AllySkoo's picture

I see your point, and I even agree with it to an extent. Lol My teeth don't define me! And the answer is different for everyone. I suppose I'm just saying I have a bit more sympathy for your SD wanting braces for cosmetic reasons, because *I* wish I'd gotten them as a kid. But if the money's not there, it's not. She's not me, so I'm not saying "you're wrong!", I'm just saying... I have some sympathy. You know?

CantKeepDoingThis's picture

Oh, I get it.

It's just sad how many things NCPs get bullied into paying for that kids don't really need! For what? For the kid to grow into a teenager that treats them like crap and only sees them as an ATM?

HHB is very vain! She can't stand any little imperfection to her appearance (wish she were equally concerned about her smell, but that is a total different issue). Girl has good skin, and by good, I mean if she would leave it alone, she wouldn't have any issues with blemishes or discoloration. BUUUUUUUTTTTTT, she just has to have that airbrushed look, so she puts on like 3 layers of crap, pushing all kinds of crud into her pores. Then, she doesn't want to take the time to properly clean it off her face...she thinks a quick swipe of a make-up cloth takes it all off (and anyone who has used any of those cloths knows that it still leaves crap behind). HHB started breaking out on her forehead, and it was the end of the world!!! She just HAD to have Proactive ASAP! Anyone knows that stuff ain't cheap. When I handed her some washcloths and face wash, and told her to wash her face daily with a new wash cloth and the cleanser instead of the wipes...oh, and don't wear so much makeup as she doesn't need it...she looked at me with eyes of fire spears!!! But...she wanted something she could just wipe her face down with a throw away cotton ball (which would never make it to the trash, but be left all over the bathroom like the wipes) and it take care of everything! Actually washing her face properly meant she would actually have to wash washcloths!

If that gives you any idea what we are dealing with....

SD11 will be getting hers in a few months. They aren't necessary. Even the doctors agree on that-less than 5% off of the measurements they call "perfect" teeth but DH will be shelling out $5k for them anyways. They will also move back that amount afterwords-all teeth move back a little. BM insists and DH won't fight her on it. Oh well, his money to waste.

My BS16 got his off a few months ago after two years-ortho told us 24-36 months was normal for a child that actually needs a decent amount of adjustments. He had teeth that made him look like a vampire on one side. Still not a medical necessity but definitely better for his self esteem and it will make keeping his teeth healthy easier.

Calypso1977's picture

i know for a fact she will not avoid the foods she's supposed to avoid and brush and care for them. he also had it put expressly in their agreement that when SD14 "loses" her retainers, etc. that BM has to pay 100%.

Calypso1977's picture

yup. kid doesnt brush now, and loses EVERYTHING. not sure why BM think that will all magically change with braces.

Wonder how many brackets she will pop eating candy bars! BD23 was so good when she had hers, though it killed her! She loves Snickers, and couldn't eat them because of the sticky, gooiness of them. The day she got them off, she begged me to stop at a store to buy a King Size! It was an hour ride to her school from the orthodontist (as we moved during the 2 years she had her braces on...her teeth moved easily), and it took BD23 the entire ride to eat the candy bar..she was savoring every single little bite, because she hadn't had one in 2 years!

Usually the BM can't WAIT to put skids in middle-class-status (TM)orthodontics. These are the same skids who haven't brushed their teeth in like two weeks. In my case, the BM had the oldest two slapped into MCS (TM) braces the SECOND they turned eight. With no prior consultation with Chef, of course, despite the fact he paid well over 200% for them via unending CS payments.

The CS "special orthodonture set-aside" (patent pending) kept getting taken out WELL after the bill was paid.

I think I saw an entire chicken wing caught in OSS's braces on one of his entitlement sessions back in the day.

thinkthrice's picture

It only stands to reason as my skids are perrrrrrrrrfect in every way; oh and beeeeeaaaaaaauuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuutiful. . .(NOT)

CantKeepDoingThis's picture

"I LOVE how it's only necessary for the bios and for the skids it's cosmetic."

You are completely misreading it, obviously! If HHB had the same problem as BD23, she would have been in braces as soon as the last baby tooth was gone! I would have pushed for it myself to save DH further dental costs of the teeth wearing on their sides!! BD23 had all of her permanent teeth turned inward because the baby teeth would not give up the space when they came in. BD23 was literally eating on the sides of her teeth, and she was in pain if she ate anything that actually required chewing. The braces were required to pull her teeth upright!

BS20 has terribly crowded teeth. I didn't say that brace were or were not required...I said that he particularly didn't care, while also pointing out that crowding teeth could potentially cause other issues due to not being able to get floss and such between tight teeth to properly clean everywhere. BS20 never had braces...the way he puts it...he plays football...so why spend all that money to make them straight and pretty only to take a hit to the mouth or something later. BS20 DOES have an actual dental issue in that his wisdom teeth are coming in wonky, and by wonky I mean his bottom ones are coming in forward instead of up. This is causing pressure on on his back teeth that are in turn causing pain. My bottom wisdom teeth came in the same way, so I know exactly what it feels like...does not feel good at times! I didn't get my wisdom teeth removed until I was 30, and then I had to have a bone graft done because of damage one of the teeth caused to fill a huge hole that was trapping all kinds of crud, and if not taken care of, I would have lost all of my teeth due to gum disease!

HHB's teeth are all in straight up and down as they should be. Her ONLY issue is spaces, because her teeth are slightly smaller than what would normally have been for her jawbone size. If they all moved forward, she would probably have enough room for a whole other tooth as well as her wisdom teeth in the back of her mouth. She does not have any pain when she eats, she has no issue cleaning her teeth properly (outside of just not doing it, because flossing and spending a full 2 minutes brushing is just too much work for her). She simply wants the spaces removed because she doesn't like them...period! THAT is what makes HHB's case one that is strictly cosmetic...even the dentist has said so.

Calypso1977's picture

i said for my SD it was necessary.... but initially she wanted them just to have them. we only found out they were truly medically necessary because my fiance pushed the issue.

CantKeepDoingThis's picture

HHB had one tooth that is a bit smaller than the rest. Yeah, our dentist said that she would need to wait to fix that one, for sure, because putting any kind of cap on it right now, the cap would likely pop off as the teeth moved around naturally as she got older. There is nothing wrong with the tooth...it is just small, but fully functional without any pain.

And considering that HHB has terrible hygiene, she doesn't need braces, as she will only mess up her teeth more by not brushing or flossing. If you don't brush regularly with braces, you get terrible, terrible stains on your teeth!

CantKeepDoingThis's picture

Yeah...well that is a given with or without braces...LOL. Wonder if HHB's sealants are still holding up. BM got those things put on when HHB was little. That seems to be the solution to kids who don't brush these days...sealants!
