Holiday Stress!!!

phxstepmom's picture

I need to know if I am being crazy or unreasonable when it comes to the holiday's and my DH's family. It has always been their Christmas tradition to celebrate on Christmas Eve, they stay up until after midnight so that the children can open their gifts. It is my families tradition to wake up early on Christmas morning after Santa came and open gift's. The problem is that we have small children and when we keep them up all night on Christmas Eve to make my DH's family happy, they are misserable on Christmas day with my family. I want to spend the holiday's with both families so my suggestion is that we still go his families on Christmas Eve but that we ask that we open gifts earlier in the evening so that we can get the kids home and in bed by a decent hour. My DH does not want to ask his family to do this, is this an unreasonable request?

No I do not think it is. They are kids and holidays are stress full enough without adding sleep deprived kids.

If he still wont say anything about it to his family...What about putting them to bed until midnight. That way they sleep from say 8 until 12. to get at least a little more sleep, and if they are shits for his family when you have to wake them up so be it.

They insist that we go over to their house at around 11am on Christmas Eve. They live in a tiny two bedroom apartment where we squeeze 13 children and 10-15 adults. Most of us have no where to sit let alone put the littles ones to sleep. It is such a misserable experience!

ok that is horrible. Talk about over staying your welcome I would hate to go to a gathering that long. It is one thing if there is space, and it is enjoyable but it just sounds miserable. I am so sorry.

NO.
Compromise and tell him that when the children are older they can stay up later. They are small children. They need their routine.

OMG!!!! :jawdrop: :jawdrop: :jawdrop: :jawdrop: :jawdrop:

Can't imagine going to someone's home for more than 13 hours!!!!!!!!

Now I grew up in a big family. We often had 45+ in a home with less than 800sq ft - but no one stayed all day!!!

Not going to like my answer but here it is anyway......YOUR kids YOUR rules. I absolutely would not make my children miserable because someone wants to cram all those folks ina tiny space for their "tradition". Make your own tradition. What the kids will remember is how the experience felt instead of what Christmastime should be. Mom stressed, dad upset and them tired. BUCK tradition baby!
