Taxes - Final and other thoughts

I owe about 2.5k. Didn't see that coming. I thought I would owe about $200. I misunderstood what would be deductible and didn't with hold enough.

DH only had about $100 in with holding for the whole year anyway. He thought there was going to be some big cash out because this would be our first time filing married and having a baby and a house but that didn't happen.

So he spent that day upset with me and i spent it paranoid that he was trying to poisen me for the life insurance policy (I'm joking but he did have a slightly sinister face that night when i finished eating the mashed potatoes).

Anyway,I wouldn't be too bothered except for i was saving about 3k for my maternity leave at the end of the year. So now, i have to change my withholding, pay the 2.5k and save 3k. All that ain't happening.

Option 1 is just taking all the leave as negitive time (assuming 3 months leave because I had complications last time and i actually needed all 3 months) which would take me about 4.5 years to pay back. I didn't want to be here that long but, it's an option.

Option 2 is LWOP about a quarter of the time and negitive leave the other 3 quarters. That would take 3.5 years to pay back. Better, but not optimal.

Option 3 is to shorten my leave which I don't want to do considering I still wasn't able to return at 8 weeks last time. There was some kind of issue with the needle they stuck in my back in addition to my c section scar causing me intense pain. My job back then involved crawling around the belly of boats and climbing ladders but I'm mostly a desk worker now so i am hoping that if i have to come back early i can set my chair at a steep recline. My birth experience could be totally different this time (i hope it is) but i am preparing for a repeat c section.

Options 1 and 2 are not that bad and i had a plan to be at work for 10 more years. But to owe 5 years is a lot. I might get sick and need the time again. I would put in for donated time but i work with a lot of men (nuclear engineering field) and they are the ultra conservative meninist types. Our admin would have a better go with getting donated time because she does womans' work. I on the other hand am doing the job of a man and a more qualified guy could have got my job if not for affirmative action.

I'm brain storming other ways of drumming up 3k by November (when i project the baby will be born) so ideas are welcome.

Its crazy that 3k which is a little less than 1 months pay after taxes will cost me aroud 3.5 to 5 years of work.

sorry Lochy, I can't help you on this one lol.......

what about contacting IRS and ask them how you can pay back or what ever... then simply just pay back on a low amount till you have money to settle?

dammit - tell Dh he married you he needs to pay, I mean it's his baby you are carrying as well... not only yours, time for DH to support his family, not only you because he still supports his ex family... more then current one

I believe you can work out a payment plan for taxes, you should look into it. That way you could have a monthly payment plan to pay off the taxes, but still keep the majority of your 3K for your maternity leave.

There is a plan where i can have it paid back in 2 years. The payment would be about 125 a month so thats not too bad.

I woukd suggest DH do somwthing but its ndot really fair to even say that. I knew what ot was when i married him. He can't get a day job unless it would pay the cost of daycare for baby1. And the money owed is due to me not with holding enough. Just like i don't pay his child support, he doesn't pay my debts. Fair is fair. I will be explaining to him my situation and see what plan of attack we can come up with.

humm... Lochy - if you where not pregnant and not saving money to support yourself while on maternity leave... then you could've paid this debt off immediately, but you saved up money to afford staying at home...

WTF - DH is suppose to support you after the birth, DH is suppose to make sure you have everything you need after the birth... it's his baby!!!, Thus either he makes sure you have the money available then and you use the savings to pay of the debt, or he tries and help you now

I agree. He will support me any way he can but he just can't make more money. He doesn't have the skill set and I knew it when I married him.

When we have talked about this before he has said he will take care of things and dont worry. Even if he has to skip paying all his support (gasp) but i just don't think he understands the magnitude or i might be overly worried. I know he will be saving and i will be saving.

Then part of me is always trying to solve things relying only on me so its possible he actually does have some kind of solution and I just don't trust him. He has surprised me before.

Short term disability isn't offered at my job. And i think at this point being pregnant is a pre existing condition so i am not sure i would be able to get it at this point.

I am looking this option up tho. I didn't even think of this.

Nice. That was helpful.

I will be checking this next open season if nwe even have short term disability. Or i might have to see what i can get independently.

Honestly, your best course of action is to take a HARD look at your budget and cut back between now and November to re-save the money. Do not, not pay child support and the IRS will charge a very high interest rate.

there is always something to cut: renegotiate or cut cable, renegotiate or cut cell phones, cut back on groceries/use coupons if you do not already, plant a garden for summer veggies, etc.

If someone has a 401K, there are often loans you can take out at pretty reasonable rates. I know there are some that say to not "borrow" from your 401K but if you are going to borrow elsewhere anyway at a higher rate, why not pay yourself back? Loan periods can be up to 5 years on my plan.

I'm currently on leave awaiting the birth of my first child. I get 4 weeks before birth and 6-8 weeks after for SDI. Then I get 6 weeks Paid Family Leave and 6 weeks unpaid. This is all thru the state. Concurrently, I am also tapping into my work disability and work PTO. This takes me to 100% pay while on leave. Have You looked into This?
