A personal question to you

I don't know if anyone will feel comfortable answering this but I'm just curious if any of you (women) were diagnosed with having PCOS(polycistic ovarian syndrome) but have managed to have children. If so... HOW!?
Were you able to get pregnant naturally or did you have to see your doctor and get on medication (clomid etc..)

To help manage my condition, I went on the Atkins diet. Lost 20 pounds, which made me feel sexy, which lead to more time in the bedroom, which led to a flu 4 months later that would not go away, which led to a trip to the doctor's office in which she told me it wasn't the flu! (How was I supposed to now the signs of a pregnancy when I had been told I wouldn't be able to have kids!?)

Search online. Since my experience, I have encountered many readings of women who went on low-carb diets that ended up pregnant without any other "assistance."

PM if you want to chat. Dealing with my diagnosis was a hard thing for me...

Best wishes!

Yeah, thats what I figured I would have to do. Everyone keeps telling me if I lose weight I will get lucky. I guess it could only benefit me right? I'm not obese but I could stand to lose a few pounds. I just feel like its a lost cause. I get so stressed out about it.
When I'm not taking birth control I NEVER have periods. I might have maybe 4 a year without being on birth control. I don't want to be on birth control I feel like its only taking me further away fron children, more than the fact that my body has created its own form of birth control (PCOS). My doctor suggested prometrium. I just wanted to see if it was possible to do it without getting in debt by having to buy all these medications and just be able to do it on my own. I guess losing weight is my only option besides taking fertility drugs.

wow you know your stuff! I found out I had PCOS 4 years ago and didn't think much of it. I was 18 and wasnt even thinking of kids! Now I'm 22, engaged and my biological clock is a tickin. I just want to do anything to get started on "preparing" my body for what HOPEFULLY might happen, because I know its probably going to take a while for me to get pregnant.
Thank you so much! you have been very helpful! I didn't know what to expect when posting this but I've become desperate...

My sister in law got put on metformin to help her get pregnant and it only took a few months for it to happen and she lost some weight to boot (well at first anyway!)

my friend had it and she was so stressed about it for YEARS.. they had tried for a long time the old fashioned way.

they got tests and where about to start IVF treatment and the doctor said "look its out of your hands now so just relax.." 6 weeks later they went to start IVF and she was pregnant!

i know PCOS isnt helpful but i also think your state of mind plays a big part as well..

My cousin has it and had two children with no extraordinary measures. A real miracle since she was supposed to have none.

I have PCOS. Tried to get pregnant on our own for 2 years tried Clomid got pregnant by the 3rd month....and by surprise got pregnant on our own 1 month later! Yes we had 2 babies 11 months apart. Took Clomid again 4 years later and got pregnant by 5th month. Good luck Smile

Thanks everyone! I noticed a pattern here, a lot of doctors are giving women who have PCOS false fear that they will never be able to have children. I guess thats why I have been so depressed about it as well. My doctor didn't exactly tell me I would never be able to have children, just that with PCOS I have a very low something like between 3% to 15% chance of getting pregnant on my own. So thank you all for the encouragement and hope!!

I have pcos, im 22, Im not trying to get pregnant, but i would like to in maybe... 10 years? lol... I take a multivitamin designed for people with pre-diabetes, and im tryin to loose some weight and i pretty much stay away from carbs. I have cycles like clockwork but dunno if anything is actually happening. Its confusing.

krenee86's picture

hmm, well I do not have a regular cycle at all. Like I mentioned already I probably would have maybe 4 cycles a year if I wasn't taking birth control. You have to have a period to ovulate.. so thats my problem I guess. I have to regulate my cycle.

iwishyouwould's picture

yeah... i have a regular cycle, to the day, but as far as my doc and i can tell ive only ovulated once in the past six months. and ive got little whiskers on my chin that i have to wax off (sorry tmi) and it is fraeking impossible to lose weight... i hate pcos.

My sister has PCOS and she tried Clomid and a few other things. She tried a new doctor and he put her on birth control pills for 6 months and he said at the end of 6 months to do it like rabbits (seriously!). They did, and she was pregnant immediately! The other doctors had given her no hope really but this doctor did and I've often wondered if part of it was a change of mind set for her.

Hang in there. I've watched my sis suffer for years and I know PCOS is just miserable in many ways.

2 kids, there's no method really, I had plenty of m/c, they reckon anything after 2 years you should start looking to offset your fertility, before 2 years is quite normal.
