SS17 is trying to burn the house down

So I go in his room this morning just to open his curtains and notice the phone charging wire on the floor.  It is bare and exposed wire.  All of the plastic coating is gone and the cables are exposed and frayed.

He sits on an office chair while watching tv/playing video games.  Guarantee this was done with his feet.  He is very tactile/sensory so probably fiddled with this wire with his toes.  The more it fell apart, the more he enjoyed the different feeling as various parts fell off/became exposed.

THIS is why I loathe the term "high functioning" autism.  No, he's not rocking in the corner and drooling.  HOWEVER he has NO COMMON SENSE.  Therefore, he does these sort of things.  To him, he is fulfilling his sensory needs.  In reality, the bare wires sitting on carpet could have literally burned the house to the ground.

He has the brain power to learn 100,000 facts about dinosaurs and history.  Yet he has to be monitored at all times because he still puts small things in his mouth, would be easily fooled by any online predator, would never wash, eat or brush his teeth again and can burn the frickin house down.

Nothing high functioning about any of it!!!

No idea...with the exception of baby feet I think feet are disgusting.  This has probably been happening for months and months.

Sd16 leaves the curling iron on when she goes to school. Ss18 puts his PS4 on top of his dresser (tv is mounted into the wall), and stacks all his clothes on top of it.

SO and I have to stay mindful of these things. I move the clothes off that damn thing everyday. PS4 is super hot every time.  I've told them countless times not to do this stuff (explaining calmly that the PS4 has vents for a reason) but they are so heedless and careless.

I would be tempted to get SD16 a curling iron that turns off automatically together with a heat-proof mat (if she doesn't already have one). I would also be looking for some sort of cover to go over the PS4 which leaves room for air to circulate but where SS18 can put his clothes on top of it. Or put the ps4 up on a wall shelf leaving the top of the dresser free for clothes. Get the kids to pay you back for them if you resent the expense. This would save the worry and the daily checks that you do.

Sometimes you have to accept others bad habits and find ways to make them safe/more acceptable rather than continually battle to change them.
