Can't wait for school to start (vent)!

In the summer, it's nice to have a break from dealing with homework, test grades, going through school paperwork etc. This summer, my DD12.5 has been at her extra curricular sport every day, most of the day. She has loved it! My SS11.5 has been mostly at BM's. During school, SS11.5 lives primarily with us and sees BM every other weekend. The summers, we reverse roles and he sees us every other weekend and lives with BM, his stepdad and his three stepsiblings. It makes for a nice break for both DH and myself. School starts in just over a week and SS11.5 has been back at our house since the beginning of August due to him starting a new extra curricular sport over here (BM lives a good hour away). I can hardly wait for school to start because since SS11.5 has been back, he's pretty much home during the day since practice isn't until evening ending my perfectly peaceful solitude while I work from home. It's back to the questions, "can i have this? can i do that? can i go to friend's house?". Back to the dishes left in the living room, the TV left on, drawers and cabinets left ajar, lights being left on, reminders to fix himself a snack, reminders to brush his teeth and comb his hair before leaving the house etc.. He just doesn't pick up after himself at all and can't seem to remember things like personal hygiene and it drives me nuts especially since I have had a nice break from all of this work when he was at his BM's. Add to the mix, I'm 8 months pregnant so my tolerance isn't particularly high to begin with plus I'm anxious/excited about the baby and all the changes that will happen. I know things will get really busy once school starts as both kids have their sports and practices several nights a week, homework to be done etc. but SS is going to middle school so that means, no more babysitting him in the afternoons! If he could just grow up a bit and be more self sufficient (remembering to brush his teeth, feed his pets, pick up after himself), it wouldn't be so bad having him home but I'm not holding my breath on that one, just counting down until school starts.

You're alone bioandstep! My Skids (SS8 & SD7) live with us full time & only visit their BM (Nasty) for less than a week per year. I am SOOOOOOOOOOO ready to get their little butts back into class. I've got a count down going. They think my count down is a big fun game (we make a huge fiasco about crossing each day off of the calendar) but it really is very serious!

I have them on a schedule during the summer to keep my SS8 from looping out on us (he's PDD-NOS)...it's been a busy summer & I can't wait for it to be over Smile

As far as the chores & stuff goes...my Skids have a list of things they are meant to do...their electronics play time (game systems, TV etc) depend on my NOT having to remind them or nag them to get their stuff done...it works really well! At 7 & 8, both Skids make their beds, clean their bedrooms, brush teeth, take multi vitamins & have not started wanting to feed the dogs...I very rarely have to remind them about the simple stuff that has been listed out for them.

Good for you that your skids actually make their beds and do all that stuff without being reminded Smile We did the chores list last school year and SS still couldn't do what he was supposed to do. He has the attention span of a flea for one thing and is very forgetful about any and everything. Half the time, he doesn't know where his own stuff is! Hard to believe he will be 12 in less than 6 months. Am hoping it's a maturity issue and that he'll eventually be more "with it".

I got the dry erase chore list from US Toys & got the markers so that the Skids could check off as they did their stuff...I had to hang it in a spot that couldn't be missed...trust me, it wasn't easy getting them to where they are but it's doable!

I agree with you. My DD12.5 is going into 7th so last school year was her first in middle school. I made it clear that it was her responsibility to make sure her homework was done, turned in etc. I only got involved once I saw an incomplete or missing assignment on the online system that parents use to see their child's progress and grades. I told my DD, if she didn't want me hovering and "on her case", she needed to not have missing assignments and not have grades drop below a certain level. There were consequences for her. As a result, she did pretty well, As and Bs Smile Not worried about her at all. As for SS11.5, he was notorious for lying about homework in elementary school but at that level, there was no online system for parents to see what was going on. With this system, there will be no more lying about homework. An incomplete or an F will speak for itself and there will be consequences. He is a lot more work though as he has bonafide issues with reading and writing. The school is aware and he has an IEP (individual education plan)in place but his attitude sucks. He just won't put forth the extra effort.
