OT - Husband clueless when it comes to events

mombydefault's picture

I love my husband. He's the best husband in the world until events such as our anniversary, valentines or my birthday occur. Our honeymoon was destroyed by his mom & his kid. He stood up for them when I became angry. Something seems to come up to prevent traveling at every single anniversary. He does not even attempt to look into travel arrangements at our anniversary unless I take the lead.

The most recent ruined event is my birthday. He never forgets, he just makes plans based on what he likes rather than thinking about my thoughts might be. For example (and this is only one of several examples), every year he wants to go out to eat Italian food for our anniversary, valentines and my birthday. I love most food, but Italian is one of only two food types that I do not like. I'm going to scream next time he suggests celebrating any event of mine or ours with Italian food. Sure enough, he suggested we go out with my family for Italian food for my birthday this weekend.

He made plans to have my family come over. He did not tell me until the day before. He was absolutely determined to get a new dining table before family came over. I have no idea why that was so important to him. So we spent all day yesterday furniture shopping. We had to borrow my dad's truck to move the furniture, which required picking the truck up & returning it. We then spent our night staying up supper late cleaning the house and assembling the new table & chairs. So I spent the weekend cleaning, shopping for furniture, driving around and staying up all night instead of celebrating my birthday. I asked him why he was insistent that we have everyone come to our house. He told me he thought it would mean more to me. That was nice of him to assume he knows what I want and how I feel without asking (sarcasm there). We met with family today. I love my mom, but she stayed over for way too long. By the time she left my husband had to go pick up skid from egg donors house. By the time he gets home, it will be too late to even go out to dinner together or watch a movie I really wanted to see this weekend. I don't need some huge event, nor do I want one. I just want my husband to put thought into something. I want a nice dinner with him and something as simple as a movie. I don't think I'm asking for much. He did decide to bake a cake. He's never bought or made me a cake in previous years. I think he feels I should be really impressed that he baked a cake. He took me to the store with him, picked a random cake mix box and threw it in the shopping cart. He didn't ask what kind I would prefer, yet it obviously was not a surprise. He served the cake without candles or anything. As always when he cooks, he had to ask questions when baking it.

I'm so depressed right now. I'm tempted to go celebrate my birthday without him, but I'm too tired from lack of sleep.

Here's how you do it. A couple of weeks before any event, especially your birthday....you start making a plan to carry out.

For you birthday, this is the game plan along with the gift you want from him.

Anniversary, you make the reservations and surprise him...you're both celebrating..remember?

Valentine's unless you fix him dinner, I think he has the right to make the call in taking his sweetheart out. What kind of food do you like? Is there an italian dish similair? How about chicken in lemon sauce with pasta and mushrooms? Try to come up with a dish along the lines of Italian, then ask the kitchen to make it for you. They're use to these kinds of request.

Buy the candles, add them on to the cake...light them and make your wish.

You can sit back and hope for the best, or you can step forward and make it happen. Your choice.

Sometimes men are dense. Try this for the next big event - "Honey for our anniversary I want to go to Vegas. I want to stay and blah blah blah hotel & what I want from you is to make the reservations and order/bake a cake from My Favorite Bakery. BTW, hint hint, my favorite stone is aquamarine & I need a new pair of hoop earrings."

You may lose some of surprise, but he will find it easier that you took the pressure off & you will be happy with what you got.
