Slightly OT - When to stop with naps?

sammmx's picture

Just curious your experiences/opinions as I know many of you have been here!

BM has decided to stop making/letting SS4 take naps. I am not sure why, he willingly takes naps and usually just once a day for an hour or so. Well, personally I feel that he still needs a nap. Point in case, every night he's come here after spending time with her and she has not taken a nap, he is extremely grumpy and falls asleep by 6-6:30pm. Way too early. It's more convenient for her to keep him up during the day, but then it comes to him being back with us and he literally just sleeps or grumps the entire time until we let him sleep. I know I have no say over the matter, and honestly OH can't really control whether or not she makes him nap either, but I'm just curious your experiences.

When did your kids stop taking naps?

What most parents don't realize is that a child's nap time "requirements" reflect an internal process of how their brain is maturing with circadian rhythms and hormone function (that regulates brain and body function). So when a baby transitions from two naps a day to one, that's one phase of the system maturing. And if a 4 year old still needs that break, well, there's really important internal work getting done and force-skipping the nap disrupts the proper hormonal organization at end-of-day and for overnight. Usually by 5 they're in gear and ready to go all day. It's physiology, and the regular schedule is important.

My oldest stopped having day naps between 2 and 3yo, she was the type of child that didn't want to miss out on anything so it was a mission to get her to sleep at all lol. My other 2 kids stopped napping between 3 and 4. SD turned 4 recently and still has day naps Smile

My SS will be 5 soon and he MUST take naps or he is just unbearable to be around. The few times he misses his 1-2 hours down a day, he completely melts down to a crying whiney mess.

I have no idea when to stop the naps either because of how badly he reacts when he doesn't get them.

My BS (now 17) stopped napping at about a year and a half old, which is really early from what I hear. I guess it depends on the kid.
