End of Summer

Well actually its been pretty uneventful.  There have been a few instances.   SD is trying to establish residency in our state.  She needs to have two forms from the final column.   The ones she can get are bank statement, paystub and credit card statement.  She now has a job and was going to talk to her boss the first day about getting a pay stub.  Um you have to work first.  Then she was going to talk to him about income so she can apply for a credit card.  Um you still need to work, probably more than a day.   Anyhow, we were talking.  Her dad, me and her.  I mentioned that my daughter , a year older than SD had difficulty getting a credit card and this was with her first job with a monthly paycheck of about a thousand dollars.  My daughter had held a credit card in her name but it was attached to my account.   I advised her to open a bank account here to which she responded that she already had a bank account. Ok, no problem, apply for a credit card .  Then I advised her to call the MVD to schedule a appointment as they are booking up.   Currently appointments are available at the end of September.  Needless to say she stormed off telling her dad and me that we are no help. He called after her that we just didn't want her disappointed if it didn't happen right away.   About ten minutes later, she came up, talked to her dad by herself and then he came up and said I needed to stop talking down to her and that she wasn't speaking to him now. I was like fine, I won't offer help or advise.  It was more invovled than that but basically it.  I'm now disengaging from her.  I'll give her rides if she needs them.  I also really watch what I say and am fighting the urge to say,  "Sorry did I offend you, etc.)

As for him.  Hardly see him.  We did however have a strange occurance.  Since last August he has only joined us for dinner a handful of times.  Last Saturday he came in and sat down at the table with a plate.  We have been operating with only four to six chairs at the table since he hasn't been joining us.  There is a extra chair at a game table we have in the next room.  When I saw him sitting down, I went and retrieved this extra chair and placed it at the table, mentioning I was going to get another placemat for the table.  No fanfare but we did need the extra chair and placemat.  We all got our food and sat down.  He sat there looking extremely uncomfortable.   Like I said its been almost a year since he joined us consistently, the last time being in May at which he wasn't sure where to sit as he joined when we were already seated.  I got up and brought the extra chair over.

Oh well.  Here's to the school year.

It must be the stepmoms fate in life.  We state an unpleasant fact, like the DMV isn't taking appointments til September, and the SK gets offended.  I have gone thru this myself.  I'm a pretty honest person but try to be tactful and diplomatic to most people.  But i feel my nearest and dearest, and I include the SKs in that, deserve the unvarnished truth about life from me.  Back in the day,  I saw many tears and sad faces when I told one of them something that didn't agree with their immature outlook.  Now that they are in their 50s, they sometimes tell me or DH we were right about something.  Of course, back then, it didnt stop them from doing things their own dumb way.  Lol.

You are correct about the DMV.  DH and I were unaware about the need for appointments and he was up against a drivers license deadline.  Long story short, we spent 3 days going from one to another to find a place that didn't require a reservation & didn't have a long line.  We finally ended up standing in a 20-person line for 45 minutes in 93 degree weather.  My DH is a 83yo with cancer.  But even worse, there was a woman in a wheelchair behind us in that weather.  Crazy.

Wormtongue, from Lord of the Rings TWO TOWERS. Or "dont shoot the messenger".

Obviously shes not ready to be helped, unless you are going to just do it for her. Sounds like you are walking on eggshells there. Kind of like me with Munchkin SD14.

Heres what I do that seems to work better than advice which just brings a big sigh...

"Hmmmmm" "oh REALLY? Wow"  "Thats cool"  "oh I didnt know that"  "Thats too bad"   "dinners ready"

I have often, often used the non-committal responses.  But the more I really care, the more I'm inclined to be honest.  In my mind I'm doing a favor but my family doesn't always experience it that way.  Lol.
