I called it

DW and I found out a few months ago that we were expecting. We decided to wait until the 12 weeks timeframe to tell people. Of course we decided to tell the kids (SD9 and BS4) first. DW wanted to video tape their reactions to use as an announcement...

DW thought SD9 would be excited about it, while BS4 would be upset. I told her I knew exactly what was going to happen: SD9 was going to get very upset, cry and whine, flail about, and threaten to move in with her dad permanently. BS4 would be interested, but wouldn't really understand yet.

So... we make the announcement, and BS4 has a look of suprise on his face, asks to touch his mom's belly. Then he gets up to go watch TV. SD9? She screams, cries, generally throws a temper tantrum, and ends it all with a threat to move to her dad's house permanently. Everything DW does to talk to her about it is met with more of the same behavior for the next hour or so, before DW gets fed up and tells her to knock it off.

DW later admitted that I had been right.

DW will never let that happen. There is also another kid at the other house (her stepsister), and apparently BioDad told DW last month that they are going to try for another child as well. So I guess SD is just up shit creek.

Really? What makes you think the kid needs to do anything other than learn that she is not the center of the universe?

When we told our kids I was expecting #4 my #1 was 9 yrs old and cried. This is the kindest darlingest sweetest girl. She cried and actually said "We are fine with 3 of us. Why have another one? We don't need any more kids." Yup. Intact family. Ex and i and our family. No weird stuff, no steps. Ordinary garden variety family.

But she made a fuss for about 2 months until I told her either she can deal with it or deal with it. I cannot send the baby back and this is our life. When she gets married she gets to decide how many children she does or doesn't have.

Guess who are as thick as thieves now?

I was 9 and my brother was 4 when my Mom got pregnant with my youngest brother. Both bio parents.

I don't honestly remember being told but I was very angry that our trip to Disneyland was canceled!
I just couldn't understand why we still couldn't go, the baby wasn't going to be here for months and we'd been planning this trip for a year. I had no concept of money being tight and another mouth to feed.

My parents split just before he was 2 and he became my baby. I had to help my Mom out lots. My Dad moved 2 hours away and she worked full time, I spent lots of time looking after both my brothers. I would argue with my Mom and say I was just a live in free babysitter but that was just teenage angst and seeing how far I could push the boundaries.
At 18 I moved out but would still help out and pick him up from school and take him to things. Taking care of him and my other brother made me a better Mom, I knew what to expect and how to entertain kids.

I'm super close to him now, we see each other at least once a week.

When my dad and stepmom had my sisters I LOVED it!! I pretended they were my babies and just snuggled them and went crazy over them. I couldn't wait to see them every other weekend. Maybe she'll grow into it. My SS14 did NOT like my BS5 at first, but now he's okay with him and my BD3 is like SS14's biggest fan so they are real close, she kind of gives him that super unconditional love that everyone needs, always telling him how much she loves him and cuddling him. Give it some time and encourage her, it might kick her into grownup mode.
