Venting here...

Asked SS to take the trash out this afternoon. He pulls the bag out of the can, then looks at it, confused. He looks over to me and says "I don't know how to tie this."

HOW DO YOU NOT KNOW HOW TO TIE THE STRINGS ON A FLIPPING TRASH BAG?? Honestly, it's not rocket science, and you're 13 years old for pete's sake!

I tell him to tie it in a double knot. Oh the utter hilarity. I had to force myself to not laugh as I watched the Beast attempt to tie a double knot with the trash bag strings.

And of course he forgot to put a new bag in the trash can.

I swear all he knows how to do is play on his computer. I want to throw the damn thing off a cliff.

OMG I thought it was just me trying to deal with an 11yr old that couldn't figure out how to open and put a new trash bag in!!!!! I'm new to this site and it makes me sad and happy that it's not just me... Like everyone around me makes me feel. My SDs idea of me telling her to go play outside is to take her computer out and sit on the trampoline and play on the stupid computer!!!!! I absolutely feel your pain!!! And when I say something to my husband he blows it off... Then turns around and gets her an iPod touch...a kindle... And the computer special for her just to play a game. And let's not talk about the phone she's getting soon... SMH I want to pull my hair out and

Nope. Nope. Nope.

We don't buy a ton of electronics. Heck, my laptop is almost six years old, and the only reason it's being replaced is because I need a newer model for school. SS went swimming with his iPhone is his pocket (BM bought it for him) a few weeks ago, and we still haven't replaced it. I'm not paying $150 for a phone for him.

Ditto. These are just standard life skills...I mean how do the parents not see it? DP told me one time recently in reference to SD11 not knowing how to change the sheets on their beds, "Why doesn't she know how?" Me, "because you don't get born knowing how to clean it. It's LEARNED and its your job to teach her." And no, it's still been since May that their sheets were washed. I am not not not doing it, told him he needs to help them do it and nada since.

It's what chores are for, not as some form of drugery and sick form of torture.
At least I have SD9'helping with things but expect her to rebel sooner or later when she realizes SD11 does basically nothing.

He knows how to make his bed, thankfully, but if a sheet corner or two pops off, he doesn't care and just leaves it that way. Drives me up a wall.

SO is teaching him how to do laundry, and fold/hang it all up, because one of his chores now is to do two loads of laundry a week.

SGD-12 does not remember to handle personal things appropriately and not leave used menstrual products on the floor next to the toilet. My BS-13 cannot FIND the trashcan or dishwasher.

So, you are one up on me.

Indigo's picture

You cannot understand how postal I went when I came home -- having to go pee badly -- and found menstrual blood smeared, not a little, but a great deal, all over the ENTIRE seat. I mean, the entire oval was red, and she was hours gone from the house.

PrincessCupcake's picture

That takes talent. I mean, drips happen, but all over the seat? That's some purposeful smearing. What a jerk face.

The amount of blood spatter looked like we should have NCIS or Sherlock show up. I've been 12 and amazed at the amount of blood I could produce, but I frickin' cleaned it up! And never, ever where fathers/grandfathers/future stepsiblings, whatever lived.

LOL! The exSSs used to pull that crap- take as long as humanly possible to do a simple chore in the hopes that one of us would tell them, "Forget it- I'll do it myself." Didn't happen! SS16 once took over an hour to unload the dishwasher, cutting into his own free time. And when we explained it was his own time he was wasting, not ours, it didn't change anything. Another time, exSS10 (then Dirol sat on his bed refusing to make it after he was asked to. For FIVE HOURS. He's so passive-aggressive he didn't seem to care at all that he was wasting a beautiful Saturday. (Shrugs.) Made no difference to DH and I. We quite enjoyed our day!

Even if he is being intentionally stupid, taking out the trash has now become his responsibility. So he can act the fool all he wants, I'm not helping him out.

We did sort of the same with him, Sally. He needed a few extra dollars for a steam card (some video game thing) so we had him earn it. But wouldn't give it to him until the tasks were complete. Took him three days. Evidently the card wasn't THAT important. Until he had his money, then we had to go and get it right away.

My SS17 did the same thing about a year ago. Couldn't figure out how to get the lid off the can, couldn't figure out how to get the bag out of the can, couldn't figure out how to put a new bag in the can, and on and on and on.

I just kept repeating "you're an intelligent kid, I am sure you can figure it out" over and over and over.

Now that I am disengaged, I don't give a fuck. Not my incapable circus, not my incapable monkey.

it's MADDENING. i totally "get" your vent.

Ha! That is one thing I've been able to get SS to remember to do every time! After me yelling out of the bathroom twice about there being no tp on the roll, and his dad saying "dude, you use the last of it, you replace it" he's been doing good ever since. Now if I could get him to stop using a quarter of a roll every damn time he wipes his bum.
