Co-sleeping rears it's ugly-ass head again

Drac0's picture

I was sleeping when I overheard DW speaking on the phone with her Dad.

"Oh that's okay....BS and BD can sleep in the trailer tent with you guys. Me, Drac0 and SS will sleep on the mattress in our tent."

Needless to say hearing that shocked me awake as if AC/DC's Hells Bells just got cranked up to ear drum damaging levels.

I shot out of bed, frazzled but brain fully conscious before my body which caused me to stumble over some toys in the hallway...

"DW!" I stammer. "Did I hear you right? You want me, you AND SS to sleep in the same tent?"

DW says "she doesn't know" what the sleeping arrangements will be like, so we may just have to sleep together.

In the same tent.....

On the same air mattress...

Sharing the same sleeping bag...

I told DW, in no uncertain terms, that is NOT happening.

"But the only option is for SS to sleep in the other tent with his cousins and SS doesn't want that."

"I am telling you what I want! I am not going back to the days of you co-sleeping with SS again!"

"Why do you have to exaggerate again?!"

"DW....I.am.NOT.Sleeping.with.you.and.SS!"

DW is not talking to me now...she thinks I am purposely being difficult to sabotage this camping trip.

wth was I thinking's picture

Kids bunk together. End of story. What is with people and this co-sleeping nonsense??

Jsmom's picture

Get him his own tent. BS19 was sleeping in his own tent sometimes at Scouts at that age...They have nice one at Wal-Mart for the occasion. Maybe worth the 70 bucks for a decent one not to have to share with him. Have you thought of scouting for this kid? May really help him.

DeeDeeTX's picture

Why not just buy a cheap, single person tent for SS? That way, everyone's happier.

I HATE CO-SLEEPING...With a baby, toddler, big kid, etc....not happening. My bed, my space. Even camping, my mattress my space..sleep on a blow up for the pool. That's what we used to do.

Wait, wait, wait. In the same tent I could *almost* understand (except, of course, for the fact that you don't want that and your wants should supersede SS's to your wife) - but the same air mattress? The same sleeping bag?? WTF?!? Is your wife stoned?!?

Willow2010's picture

Are you absolutely sure she said that SS could sleep on the mattress with you and her? Maybe she just said the tent...? I HOPE!

Drac0's picture

Nope...I didn't misunderstand.

I asked her twice.

Willow2010's picture

Yikes...sorry Draco. Try to have a great time anyway. Maybe the inlaws camper will sleep more people than just those 4.

This FIFTEEN year old kid needs balls. Apparently he lost them somewhere along the way if he would RATHER sleep with his mother and step dad than really ANYWHERE else....

DaizyDuke's picture

Why in the wide world of sports would this FIFTEEN year old kid WANT to sleep with his mom and step dad, rather than other kids?? This kid is about 27 fries short of a happy meal and so is your DW for thinking that this scenario is "normal"

She_Sparkles's picture

My little one is 12 and he'd rather sleep outside with the wild animals than share a sleeping bag w/DH and me. Does the 15yr old have any developmental issues mentally? Something that would prevent him from finding this as wonky and whacked out as the average kid would find it?

KiFire's picture

LOL!!!

Tell your DW my SD5, BS4, and SD8 sleep in their own tent in their own sleeping bags on little yoga-mat things in one tent, while FDH and I sleep in our own sleeping bags on yoga-mat things in our own tent.

Your SS is what 14? He will be FIIIINE. Christ even girl scouts have slept with no tents by that age. I remember going out and setting up "camp" and we all slept in our bags under mosquito-netting we hung over sticks.

:O
I hear you on this! My fiancé has three children ages 14, 13 and 11. The 14 year old and the 11 year old are boys an live with him primarily. Up until we got engaged two weeks ago, this youngest son refused to sleep alone. If my fiancé even tried to sleep in his bedroom with me this kid would come in and wake him up multiple times to come "sleep with him on the couch" and my SO would oblige every time. I started having discussions with him about it that if we were talking about marriage he better get this son used to sleeping on his own. So far in 2 weeks since coming back from our engagement trip the youngest has slept in his room. All he really needed to do was put his foot down about it. So I understand completely and it's frustrating!

WTF...REALLY's picture

His 15????????

Holy shit - that is soooo wrong!

My son is 14 - and he would look at me as if I lost my mind to even suggest such a thing. Your wife is NUTS and is going to make one hell of a messed up man out there in the world.

Dose he ever ask people to "it puts the lotion on" cuz I see that in his future, just sayin

kathc's picture

Why the hell is she asking him what he wants? He's a kid. He's supposed to do what he's told. If she wants to sleep with SS she can go join him in the kids' tent and let you have the entire tent to yourself }:)

I haven't been able to respond since I've been a little busy preparing for this horror-fest....oops...I mean "family camping trip". Apparently, the site my in-laws reserved only has place for one "extra" tent. My in-laws have one of those big- ass Death Star camping trailers that FIL has been dying to show off. So the camp site will only allow an extra tent to be propped up.

When DW told me this I just walked away in disgust. She knows I am not happy with her in-laws and I am not happy with this trip. While I was taking a shower, DW said that she is going to go out and buy a 6-person tent and a seperate mattress. This way SS will still be in the same tent with us but not on the same mattress. I just looked at her and shrugged my shoulders. I really don't care at this point.

I have a business trip to go to as soon as I get back from vacation, and it saddens me, to the point where tears are welling in my eyes, that I am looking more forward to the business trip than vacation with my family.

I am glad I am not the only one here who sees how effed up this is.

I would stay home, but I don't want to miss out on BS and BD's first camping experience. I especially don't trust Eve(il) around my kids. Last time my kids were with her she tried to convince them to follow her onto a busy road.

AllySkoo's picture

Aw Drac0, I'm sorry! That totally sucks that you're looking forward more to the work trip than family vacation. I really hope it's not as bad as you fear! At least your wife is attempting to make it better.

Drac0's picture

My blood is boiling right now.

DW is Skyping her folks right now as I am typing this.

The "sleeping issue" as DW is calling it is naturally being treated with exact same in-law response algorithm.

MIL: "oh but the kids will have such a great time running about, they'll sleep soundly throughout the night. Once they're asleep it will feel like they are not even there. Don't worry about it."

FIL: "Tell Drac0 if he's uncomfortable sleeping with SS, I'll sleep with SS and Drac0 can sleep with MIL"

I feel like punching something right now...

Shaman29's picture

Draco.....I just read your response about the two room tent. If I were in your shoes, I'd make sure the little bios are sleeping with SS. Not with the grandparents. No special rules for SS at all. If he gets the tent, they do too.

I'm sorry your W refuses to let go and allow her BS to grow up and be a man.

I still haven't forgiven H for a boneheaded move he pulled several years ago, while it wasn't a camping trip, he put what the skid wanted (not needed) above the needs of our relationship. Huge failure on his part.

I really think it's time for marriage counseling for you both. I don't see this getting any better as he gets older. I see it getting worse. In fact I see a basement apartment and your SS looking like older Stewie living in it.

Wow. Most kids LOVE to go camping BECAUSE they all get to sleep in a tent together!

I shudder for how this kid is going to be in another few years. Can't she understand that sometimes the mama bird has to push the baby a little bit to get it to fly??
