Beginneth the Great Math Marks Mystery (Part I)

Drac0's picture

SS has a math quiz every week. I keep asking him “How did you do? What mark did you get?”.

For the last month SS’s answer is always “I dunno” or “I am not sure. I think I did okay.”

I had enough and said that unless I see results by the weekend, I am calling the school. Weekend came and went. Still no results.

Meanwhile, DW and Donkeykong are still in “talks” over tutoring.

So I called the school and spoke to the secretary who said she’ll pass the message to the math teacher. Math teacher calls me back and says she doesn’t have all the results on her at the moment but she will get SS to write down all his results in pen in his agenda book, she’ll sign it and I can review it.

SS was supposed to bring his agenda book with the test results in it yesterday.

I come home from work and all the kids (BS, BD and SS) were playing in the living room. I walk in and the first thing I say is “SS, I want to see your agenda book please.”

SS pretends he doesn’t hear me and gets very uncomfortable. So I repeat myself. SS goes to his room. BS and BD try to follow SS but SS prevents them from going into his room by closing the door on them. I think SS has gone to get his agenda book.

Five minutes pass.

“SS!” I call

“What?” SS responds half-heartedly.

“Your AGENDA BOOK!!! Get it out here now!”

SS opens the door and gives it to me. I flip through it.

There’s nothing.

“Where are your marks?” I ask.

“Teacher didn’t give them to me.” SS answers.

“What do you mean she didn’t give them to you?”

SS breaks down and starts crying (Reset SS waterworks meter) and starts telling this long sad story about how the teacher asked all the students to get out a blank piece of paper for the next in-class assignment. SS didn’t have one. One thing led to another and the teacher yelled at him for being unprepared…

This story was extremely conflicting (not to mention confusing).

“Why didn’t you have any blank sheets of paper SS?” I ask “Your Mom and I bought you tons of loose leaf.”

“I dunno.”

“Did you have them with you in class?”

“Yes.”

“So what was the problem?”

“I dunno. She said I was fooling around.”

“Why would the teacher say that?”

“I dunno…”

Gargh….This is so frustrating. Even more frustrating is that DW believes SS. But I STILL don’t understand why SS’s agenda book was empty.

I’m sure there is more to this story.

Maybe he didn't have his agenda book so she told him to write it on blank paper and he misplaced or didn't give it to you???

BLAH!! SS is purposely failing school. DH and I are at our wits end. BM doesn't care. She actually said she wants him to fail. Sigh. Anyway I think this goes along with the mystery of SS12's homework. He does it at our house. I watch him put the completed homework in his homework folder. I watch him put it in his backpack. He takes the backpack out the door. Homework disappears between the door and school. Because he doesn't turn it in and it's no longer in his backpack. I'm with stepdown. He probably told her he forgot and she probably told him to write it down on loose leaf paper and then he threw it away.

This would happen to SS too. We see the homework getting done and put into the school bag and leave the house.

The teacher even told us that she would announce to the class "Okay everyone, please hand in your homework please!" and she would walk around desk to desk to pick up their assignments.

She gets to SS and is STANDING OVER HIM and asks "SS? Your homework please?" and he STILL won't hand it in.

I fear SS is destined to be one of those people standing in front of you in a line-up at the bank and when the teller says "Next please!" he just stands there looking confused, wondering what that means to him.

Wow! I sometimes click on the comments that seem interesting, but I would have no idea whose blog/forum topic I am wandering into.

Is this not the year 2014? Does this math teacher not have email? Hell most of the teachers in my district have their own web pages...Why are you having to go through a miscreant child to communicate grades and such with a teacher??

I would go to the district website and find the teacher's email, and get the information you are looking for that way.

Ha! We are birds of a feather! I love words too, which is why I LOVE reading books on my NOOK... I never fail to come across a new (to me) great word.. I love to use the "look up" button for definition, meaning, use etc. so I can add it to my repertoire. Wink

Actually I have ALL the teacher's emails, but not all teachers use them. Some would prefer I email them, some would prefer I call, etc. One teacher even created his own website which is outside the school portail's domain and has a PHP style forum site where parents can ask questions...So yeah, welcome to 2014, where there are 56754987 ways to track information.

When I was a wee one, and I tried to pull this kind of crapolla, my Mom drug me by the hair straight back to school and in to see that teacher who of course would say she HAD written down the grades or given homework or whatever... and my mother would force me to not only apologize for lying and blaming the teacher, but would also ask the teacher to give me a reprimand such as extra work, etc.

No way would this bullshit be allowed.

We had a parent at one of the high schools in the district where I work that did this, only it didn't go over so well. The parent ended up disrupting the class, by raising her hand, asking stupid questions etc. The teachers got pissed and went to Principal who put a screeching halt to it.

gotta give her kudos for trying, but it was an epic fail!

My Dad actually threatened me with that!

He said. "I will follow you to school and stand next to you in all your classes. Everytime you are not paying attention or doing something you are not supposed to be doing, I will smack you upside the head!"

And I am sure he would have done it too. I smartened up.

Our school district has teachers post every test, every quiz score on a portal that we can log onto. No surprises. EVER. Skids can't lie. Fortunately, both skids here are in gifted programs and do very well in school. SS could get straight A's but sometimes he decides that he wants to hurry through his homework and studying so he can play Xbox and text all night. DH doesn't check up on him very well.

Gabriels Mom's picture

We have that portal as well. DH and I check SS's stuff daily. We are trying a new approach. This marking period. We keep saying we are just going to let him fail because he so obviously wants to fail but we can't let it go. LOL so we are doing everything in two week increments. He wants a Yankees hat. It's not really expensive like 25.00 so I told him if he turns in every single classwork/homework assignment and gets at least a B on all his quizzes/tests the rest of the week(he's already turned in mon, tues and wed homework) and next week. I will buy the hat. Then he can pick something else and we'll set the goal for two weeks and see what happens. I hope this works because nothing else seems to...
