O/T Update to The Journey to Grey Hair

Hello all. I posted about a month ago that I was finally taking the plunge and figuring out a way to get to my natural grey hair (for the last 10 years) from the dark brown it was when I was young, and the dark brown I've had it colored for years.

My beautician is THE BOMB! The first phase a month ago, she foiled my hair (like she was highlighting) but actually stripped the hair of all color. Then she did an all-over rinse to start lifting the dark brown from other parts not completely stripped. She then treated it with a toner, and gave me this really great shampoo (called Viral) that is a really dark purple toning wash to use every other day. The Viral actually bonds to my stripped hair to bring out the grey and keep it from turning dingy yellow/tan.

Tonite I went back for phase 2, which consisted of foiling/stripping even more hair, now to blend in the 2" of natural grey roots I have. She finished it off with toner and the Viral shampoo, and it's beautiful! Still not there 100% yet, but the hair that is still somewhat light brown actually turns more of an ash color with the shampoo. So I now have ash grey hair with silver grey heavy highlights. This time she really hit it hard around my part and my face to strip and blend the darker hair with obviously grey roots.

In about 6 weeks I'll go back again and she'll see if she needs to do a little more, or if we can just continue to let it grow out as is. I have to say, I'm loving it! My close friends say they love it... and I've known a couple of them for 45 years (1st grade chums) - they wouldn't hold back if they thought it looked bad, they'd tell me it was horrid in no uncertain terms.

As an aside, there was this really elderly woman there getting her hair dyed JET BLACK, along with her eyebrows (she looked like Groucho Marx). She was very outspoken about how 'appalled' she is of all of these youngsters getting their hair dyed grey for the fun of it (obviously referring to THIS 50 year old 'youngster'). I bit my tongue for as long as I could, then handed over a heart-felt compliment to her.... I smiled and said, 'Nice eyebrows....'

That's great! It's so nice to find a good hairdresser who knows what she's doing and cares about doing it well!

My AIL (In her mid sixties) dyes her hair.. and it looks worse every time she does it. And I know she shells out a load of cash for it, but money can't fix everything. Last time I saw her, it looked like she had dipped her hair in ink. But it was really damaged, like crunchy looking. Just bad. Don't get me started on her eyebrows.

She would probably look great with natural grey hair. My MIL (AILs sister, a few years younger) has beautiful hair, though she also dyes it. But it looks very natural. Maybe she doesn't have a lot of grey yet though. :/

I definitely want to let myself go grey. I really don't want to start dying my hair just because I'm "showing my age" haha

Started to go grey shortly after 1st marriage at age 18... Im approaching the late 50s now and have been using Naturtint. I use a knockoff of Wen "One" at Sally's, always air dry my hair and cut it with a crea clip.
I always get compliments on my hair. "Oh you have such nice/good/beautiful hair." If they only knew!!

Oh how I wish I had grey hair that I could go with. My dad lived to be almost 90 and just had a few grey hairs - mostly in his sideburns. His mother, brother and sisters were the same. They actually looked kind of weird in pictures - too black. But IRL you could see the tiny bit of grey and realize that it was natural.

My mother's family all went grey (or silver) at a very early age - 30 for most. The ones who have gone natural have beautiful white hair. Now I didn't want that at 30 - but I'd love to have it now.

But no - at 70 I have mousy brown hair with a little bit of grey. Even my hairdresser said that I could not go grey as I didn't have enough grey.

I dyed my hair a dark brown for years. I got tired of doing it. About 2 years ago, I decided to go natural. I'm naturally a dirty blonde. My hair dresser highlighted my hair, cut it into a short pixie, and then it took 10 months to fully grow out. My hair is now a very white blonde, platinum blonde. I thankfully have my grandmother's white hair and didn't go salt and pepper like my mom. People ask all the time where I get it colored and don't believe me when I say it's natural. I'll never color again. The best thing - no more damaged hair. It's virgin hair now and very soft. It's now almost chin length, and if I let it grow, I'll look like a plump, round, not as pretty Daenerys Targaryen.

My MIL had thinning hair that wouldn't grow. Someone told her to only wash it once a week and the other days that she showers to just use conditioner. Sounds weird. But it's working. Her hair has grown at least 5-6 inches.

My hair is going salt and pepper like my mom's. My dad's is snow white.

This reminds me of something YSD asked me once.
YSD: Why is your hair going grey? My Mom's isn't.
Me: I don't dye my hair.
YSD: OH yeah.....

That's the attitude I took for a LONG time. But it got to the point that it didn't look good when I did it myself, and it was costing $150 per session to have it done professionally. And my hair grows FAST... so 4 weeks after a color, I'd have WHITE roots 1" long.

But I did put the caveat in this adventure that when someone mistakes me for my DS16's grandma, I'm going back to dark brown...

Yeah I find that older women, when they try to stay with dark hair, just ends up making their skin look pasty and thus very obviously a bottled-hair color. I find silver streaks on aging women just beautiful. I can't quite get myself up there... but I'm trying. I have a streak of silver that's just over my right eyebrow... and a few here and there... I usually just braid up the front (I had bangs before, so it's still shorter than the rest... frames my face) and clip the rest up.

I have a box of my color in the bathroom, though, for a "just in case" scenario.

I love the viral! But.... if I leave it in too long before rinsing, then it looks like I'm channeling my great aunt who had blue hair and pincurls...
