OT - Throwback Thursday

Let's Throwback to Summer fun! DH and I went boating with friends yesterday and we were talking about childhood and Summer and favorite memories.

Here are some of mine:

It was one of our family camping trips at a huge lake with sandbars. We were at the lake while Mom was making dinner and Dad was builidng a fire. My oldest brother had been an arsehole to us (siblings) most of the day. Some of the sandbars continued underwater for a few feet, so it looked like you were walking on water. Well, ol' smartass wasn't paying attention - he was too busy expounding on his superior intellect - when he walked off the sandbar and disappeared underwater. Yep. That particular sandbar had an 8' drop at the end. Naturally, the rest of us had to razz him about his "superiority". He wasn't much of an arseholde the rest of the weekend. Diablo

With 5 kids (7, when we had 2 foster sisters), my siblings and I often played gamess together (outside! - no Atari! You never whined you were bored unless you wanted a chore.). Some were typical things, like softball, and Kick The Can; others were created, like Speed Bump and Star Trek. We had a YUGE tree in the front yard. Now, poplars are notorious for looking perfectly healthy, while rotting on the inside. My oldest brother (jeez, I pick on him a lot, don't I?) decided he was going to play Telephone Man. With MY orange jumprope. He threw the jumprope over a branch, planted his feet on the tree, and started the climb. His legs were fairly straight, so it looked like he was sitting and climbing. Well, damn if that tree branch didn't snap and big brother dropped a good 6 feet right onto his arse. The rest of us were ROLLING on the ground, laughing. Mr. Superiority hrumphed, "It's NOT funny!" Oh, yes, big brother, it was freaking hilarious!! That story gets told darn near every year. LMAO!!!

This isn't so much of an actual event, but fond memories of an ongoing theme. ALL of us were Star Trek fans, so we often "played" Star Trek. Character selection went in age order: oldest brother was Captain Kirk, oldest sister was Mr. Spock (lucky!!!), middle brother was Mr. Scott (that brother is a freaking GENIUS!!), middle sister was Doctor McCoy (and she's know a doctor), I had the choice of Sulu or Chekov. While I was a little dejected (I wanted to be Spock, dammit!), I embraced the role of Chekov and worked that Russian accent like a champ. Hey, at least they didn't make me the eternally doomed Red Shirt!

Some of my favorites:

I LOVE going on hikes... I remember one time my dad got up with me at midnight to do a midnight hike so I wasn't hiking alone when in high school... That's probably one of my favorite memories from growing up.  We actually got along really well and it was so peaceful compared to everything else going on at the time.

I also had a friend when I was in Kindergarten, we used to go out and "explore," there were a few horses close to her house that we would go see when our parents weren't around, the owners would let us in the pasture to pet them and gave us carrots to feed them.

My best friend just a few years ago came to visit from New Zealand (she moved there) and we went to this super cheap Mexican joint and ate burritos. Nothing crazy going on. It was just such a happy moment. And those burritos were fantastic. (I miss mexican food so much... lol)

You liking Star Trek makes me so happy! I've seen virtually all of the series... I used to binge watch them whenever I could!!! Enterprise is my favorite Smile

The original Star Trek and Next Gen are my faves. Spock and Captain Picard are my faves. Now I want to go home and binge watch them!! Biggrin

We lived 500 miles from other relatives but each summer we would spend 2 weeks with my maternal grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.  We played from sun up until after dark. At night we kids would catch fireflies while the adults chatted on the wide front porch of my grandparents' home. Days were spent playing in the barn or corncrib, picking blackberries, going into the garden to feast on fresh, sun-warm veggies, and playing games we made up.  Sometimes the adults would join in our games, too.  My grandparents, all of my uncles and all but 2 of my aunts are gone now.  We lost a cousin last year.  What I wouldn't give for my kids and grandkids to have been able to experience those 2 weeks of my childhood summer.  So much love in that place.

We used to travel East for my Mom's family reunion. It was similar - outdoors all day, kids playing while adults chatted. Good times.

Michigan summers, I have fond memories of picking berries with my Grandpa, then helping Grandma make pies - and we made Pie Crust Cookies with the dough scraps! just pieces of dough sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon - nom nom nom). The old barn (no longer had animals) was covered with old license plates - used to get a new plate every year. We shot BB guns at the plates, practiced shooting at the "range" Grandpa made waaaaaaaay out back, played all sorts of games in the yard: Mother May I, Kick The Can, Red Rover (with our cousins), going on hikes with Dad, playing in waterfalls, swimming, climbing out to the lighthouse at McLain... Good times!

We did alot of camping, sometimes at the beach, other times at a local state park. There was also Scout Camp and YMCA camp. Mostly it was my sisters and me playing in the kiddy pool, sprinkler, and anything else we had outside.  Although we also went to the town pool quite a bit as well.

Neither sister was a Star Trek fan so i was always Spock !!!!!!! (although there was no other crew since they wouldn't play that with me  lol )

Aniki one of my favorites and earliest memories was when my father took my training wheels off of my first bike. I still remember that big push he gave me. Oh I thought I was hot sh!t because I learned to ride a bike before some of the neighbor kids did. That summer I was on that bike all day. Of course I was told to only ride around the block. But oh how I loved that bike. It is a great memory of my Dad too.

Queen, that IS a great memory!! *yahoo* My Dad taught me how to ride a bike.

I have many, MANY wonderful childhood memories of doing things with him. I'm 53yo and still Daddy's Girl. Yes 3

I was the little tomboy girl who wanted a pony. My dad liked to take me to the county fairgrounds to watch horse shows, rodeo's, and just walk around- and my young, beautiful 1st grade teacher AND my friend's mom showed horses & I was so stoked to see that & pet their horses.

There were no girls my age in our neighb, so I was always either playing alone with my Breyer model horses or war, GI Joe, Sgt. Rock or any of the superheros in my comics (hippie parents didn't get a TV until I was in high school, class of '90!) With my bro & the boys. I was the Nurse in war which was cool because our treehouse "base" had a pulley with a milk crate tied to it, and I got to raise & lower the weapons, snacks, supplies.

We also played a lot of GI Joe in the yard. A flat stump from a huge tree had been removed before my parents bought the house, so that was our secret fortress and the top was the helicoptor landing pad. We dug below the rotting stump to create secret fortress tunnels. We also permanently lost the new, camoflaged "Stalker" GI Joe guy when we were "testing" the cammo by hiding Stalker in the bushes & grass & having the other try to find him. Stalker was a black soldier with rolled-up cammo sleeves (so you could see his strong soldier muscles!) and was one of the good guys, so when we failed to find him, Stalker became the cammo LEGEND! We were SO impressed with how 100% effective the new cammo was, we talked about it reverently for years. I'm sure the lawn mower eventually got to poor Stalker.

Other fun memories include playing at Golden Gate Park & listening to live music with my hippy rocker dad (he's 72 now, still rocking the ponytail). He was a huge music affectionado, and I am grateful I got to grow up listening to a lot of great music, including jazz, classical, Afro-Cuban, Big Band, experimantal, etc. Pretty much everything except Country or pop. Did anyone ever listen to the Hearts of Space radio show? It was on weekly on KPFA but syndicated, loved that trippy music too.

StepUltimate, GI Joe sounds like my kind of game!! I actually have a GI Joe action figure from the 60s. It was my oldest brother's and one of the "hand-me-downs" that I inherited. I still have him!

Being outside ALL DAY - from almost dawn, making lunches with the neighbor kids, taking our bikes and going on adventures.  Not getting home until dinner (how did we always know when that was?!).  I encourage SD12 to get out and do things on her own, we live in a great area for it - take your bike and your friend and just GO. (I never lost the love of bike riding).  Riding horses whenever we wanted, laying on the horse's back while she grazed in the field - oh I loved that mare.  And even the hated hay bale days - HOT weather working with family in the hay field; I learned how to endure discomfort and how to drive a tractor and truck at a very young age.

Cover, we had these weird things called "wristwatches" that helped us figure out when to be home for dinner!
