How to stop the BABY talk

PokaDotty's picture

I'm going to lose my mind if it doesn't stop.... nothing works....

My SD10 few months away from 11 is STILL baby talking! We've tried the time and time again "speak properly" which she will for for like 10 minutes and it's back to the baby talk. I'm at my wits end. It's embarassing and even the other girls are telling her to "talk like a normal person".

I'm assuming she gets away with this at BM's house but we are about to go 6 weeks summer visit and we seriously need suggestions on how to nip this.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried "not hearing" her unless she speaks properly?

"Pardon me?"

"Excuse me?"

"What did you say?"

"Did you say something?"

"What? I didn't catch that."

See how many you can come up with before resorting to the blank stare.

Stop answering/listening/responding to her when she talks like that.

If she insists, feed her baby food and drinks only out of a baby bottle. Just be sure she won't actually like this!

What you allow will continue
She doesn't get harsh enough/consistent enough consequences so she keeps doing it.

Let me get off my soapbox here - ss12 does it too and every time I hear it, I text dh (yes, we're in the same house) and tell him to correct ss12. DH needs life-coach/cognitive behavioral therapy-type assistance.

My BD6 has tried to pick up the baby talk. I do admit, I have a silly babyish voice I use to say certain silly phrases to her with. BUT, when she tries to do the baby talk instead of her regular speak for regular conversation, I tell her she can use that voice with her friends, but not with her mama!
