Sneak eating

Someoneelse's picture

After dinner, me and DH were watching TV, and SD and into the kitchen, she came out and asked DH if he could help peel an cutie/halo orange since her hands were too wet from washing black berries. I don't mind if anyone is hungry, they are allowed to go grab snacks, and it sounds like she's making healthy choices. But, even after DH and i decided to go to bed, SD was still in there... i thought nothing of it really, she's a strange child maybe she was juston her phone or something, i try to stay out of any of it. I get up in the morning, my air fryer is dirty, there's a spoon with peanut butter smeared in the sink (like she licked it but didn't bother to clean it), almost a whole stick of butter is gone (i just pulled out butter the night before so it will be soft by morning, there's about 1/2 tbsp left)...

<p>

Nobody is up yet, but who wants dibs on SD denying any of it, and DH blaming DD18(for some reason she's the one everyone likes to blame) ?

Well, she's not really sneaking if you guys have no rules around snacks, but she certainly is leaving a mess for someone else to clean up. I vote for your DH doing it.

You're right, it's not really sneak eating, but it's just really weird.  It's like she goes out of her way to "prove"she's eating healthy, when i could REALLY care less... but dang, almost a whole stick of butter? What did she do with almost a whole stick of butter?

I guess the right word would have been SNEAKILY eating? Like why would a 17yo worth no disabilities need help pealing a cutie/halo orange? She did it to put on a "look at me in eating healthy" show... but then this? Like i could care less if she made a whole second dinner... but why put on a show like that?  To be sneaky... it's weird.  That was my point.  But if i bring up that she used up all my butter i set out to soften by morning and the kitchen was left in disarray, she's going to deny the whole thing.  That was my second point.

Gotcha. Still seems good to make DH clean it up and ignore her attention-seeking behavior.

I agree! Thanks, and i get where you were coming from. I don't want to restrict food and create an unhealthy relationship with food, so she not REALLY sneaking food, but she's being sneaky about it, so i get that maybe my wording was incorrect/confusing.

They put a quick end to the sneaky lying bullshit.

"Soooo. You didn't do it?  Really? Isn't this a clip of you doing what you just claimed not to have done?"

Sounds like a binge to be honest.  If it keeps happening she may need to be evaluated for an eating disorder.  A whole stick of butter is not normal.

And yes DH should clean it up.

Someoneelse's picture

BM Refuses to get her tested for anything.  DH has told BM SEVERAL times he thinks she needs to be psychologically evaluated.

I also am wondering a while sick of butter in 1 sitting? I'm thinking did she eat it like a candy bar? Like wth? What did she do with it?

As a recovering bulimic, I agree with caninelover. This definitely sounds like binge eating. Which begs the question: Is she purging?

tog redux's picture

I was wondering that, too - except that binge eaters usually hide the evidence of their binging, in my experience.

She's definitely not purging, she will eat all day long and eat enormous amounts of sugary food. She ate an ENTIRE birthday cake meant for her brother once, she ate half a dozen cupcakes another time after one of my DD's birthday (it was what was leftover.) I was going to serve it as desert after dinner, just to get it out of the house, but i guess sd took care of it for us.

Is she overweight? If not, she might be purging. People with eating disorders get very good at hiding it.

So she's a junk food addict.  Many teenagers are but it is really unhealthy.  If you can't get her evaluated you may want to implement a house rule of no eating after 8 or 9 pm.  Even a teenager should be able to make it through the night without raiding the fridge.
