Pre teen with ODD

UniqueR'Us's picture

Hello, our youngest, 12 has been diagnosed with anger, depression, and ODD. Seems like certain classes in school triggers these feelings and he reacts negatively. Math and language arts seems like those two subjects that he disrespects teachers and classmates. Like today, he didn't understand a math question, he did ask the teacher for help, but she was busy with another student. Instead of him waiting patiently he disrespected the teacher, ripped up his assignment, stapled it, and then turned it in. When he came home you can tell he didn't have a good day, we asked if anything has happened today he said no he had a good day. But the teacher emailed and explained differently, he shut down after that. It stresses us out so much! Any thoughts to how to better handle these kind of situations? Anyone go through this?

ADHD with ODD is exceptionally difficult to work with. As he has been diagnosed, there must be some program or advice or counselling you have received? The teacher should be aware of this and have the necessary tools to handle the matter. Is your child medicated? Is he getting therapy to handle his anger issues? There are some amazing support groups as well as advice pages on ODD. If you'd like more information PM me.

We have been and are going through this with my SS. It is a hard road.

If he has been diagnosed with ODD definitely get him into counseling. It's not only for him but for you to help know how to handle him when he has the outbursts. My DS9 was diagnosed with ODD, ADHD, and anxiety 2 years ago. After trying all the remedies I could find online and trying counseling premedicine I finally had to break down and do the meds. Now the combination of meds and counseling he is a completely different child. He still has his days but those are just normal preteen I believe from what DH says lol. I will say though there is no medication just for ODD so counseling is your best bet in handling this.

Monchichi had a good idea with support groups too. Just like this forum knowing there are other people going through the same thing as you helps.

I do have a question though. In regards to his outbursts being in just those classes. Is there a possibility that in the others the teachers are not as hard on him or they are just easier for him? I know with my son his ODD comes out when something is really difficult for him to understand. Being either academics or something we are saying when he is already worked up from being upset about something else.

If you have any more questions or just want to vent feel free to PM me any time.
