My 2 year old seems to be wanting to potty train, and being this is my first time and my mom doesnt have much advise I thought I would turn to other moms Smile I have made a sticker chart, and try putting him on the potty every twenty minutes but he still manages to wet his underwear (and doesn't really mind or tell me) He instigated potty training and decided he wanted to, he even picked his underwear out. I desperatly need ideas

I'm no expert whatsoever but we have finally passed the potty training stage with SS and just about ready to venture towards night-time potty training (as he still uses a pull up and it's soaking wet every morning). Here are a few tips that helped us:

We made sure to never get mad at him for going potty in his pants...we emphasized that we all make mistakes. It was hard at first because SS would go in his pants and wouldn't say anything at all, then later we'd discover he had wet himself. So we started emphasizing, "If you have an accident, all you need to say is 'oops! I had an accident!' and we'll help you out."

Make sure your son can easily and quickly take off his pants. This was difficult for SS, also, as BM would always put him in pants with a BUTTON rather than a snap. We always changed him into sweatpants to wear around the house so he could pull them on and off easily and quickly. If you are brave, you can also let him walk around naked in your house -- he may have a few accidents on your floor but it'll be way more obvious to notice the signs that he has to go and he may be less likely to pee the floor than his pants (where it's contained and easier to hide).

Otherwise it sounds like mentally your son is completely ready -- he's initiated interest. Keep modeling for him (even if it means announcing loudly that you have to go potty!) so it's on the forefront of his mind that even adults make a conscious decision to go to the bathroom. Get a few potty books (the Elmo one was SS's favorite). Have him sit on the toilet and read with him or sing the ABC's until he goes. It might take awhile but once he starts to control the sensation he'll get better and better. Make sure he knows that you don't have to go right away, it can take awhile to come out. SS was really impatient and would say he had to go, sit there and then get off right away if it didn't come, then he'd have an accident 3 minutes later!

One more thing I can add… bribery.
SS3 had no inkling at all to attempt potty training; we did the star chart… the “look! big boy underpants like your brother!” approach… nada.

And then we bought him ALL of the “How to Train Your Dragon” toys! We put them all up out of reach in the cabinet in the bathroom, and pointed to them every day saying, “Every time you go potty, you get a new toy!” and about two weeks later, he was pretty well on the way to being completely potty trained!

(we cheated though… very night we’d put the opened toys back on the shelf with the unopened ones and made him “earn” them back with successful potty trips… we’re not made of bleedin money!)

I didn't have to help potty train my SS, but I know that they used the idea of putting him on a potty chair either every half hour or every hour. LOTS of praise when he makes a pee pee in the potty chair! Make it a huge game that is fun for him to participate in!

I am dreading PTing my 9 month old, but I have heard that the repetition thing works good if you are home and have the time to dedicate to it. I've also heard the bribery thing works wonders! Smile

rent "potty power" from the local library. My BD3 loved it when I was potty training her. She told everyone she was a big girl and didnt need diapers anymore. The songs and storyline are catchy, so even I got the darn songs stuck in my head.
