Camping in Hell

SilentlyCoping's picture

So, DH and I recently bought a travel trailer. It's funny because when we were out looking at them, never once did the fact that it had no room for his children come up. He was content with the fact that it had a dual reclining couch and a nice queen size bed for the both of us. So we've taken it out a few times and the I guess the guilt got to him that he hadn't bought his kids out in it. So I reluctantly agreed to go camping with his parents and take two of his three kids. Well, that was the biggest mistake of my life. There's just not enough room and he caters to these kids so much.

It was time to go to bed last night and so we all got ready. I feel very uncomfortable walking around in front of his fourteen-year-old son in  just my pajamas, so I kept all my undergarments on and got into bed. It was almost a hundred degrees where we were and although we have air conditioning it was still very hot inside.

I was miserable laying there with all my undergarments on under my pajamas. Then, I guess bedtime meant turn on a movie. So they turned on a movie that was high action and because the AC was on, they had to have it so loud I couldn't even sleep. And even these little teenagers, who are 14 and 15, needed a night light on. Are you fucking kidding me?

I slept like shit and so now the husband this morning is giving me attitude. I guess I'm I saw him giving him attitude because I'm tired and grumpy. He took his kids off to the arcade, which is located in casino near the campground. His parents went off to gamble as well. So here I sit at the campsite all by myself and all I can think about is how bad I want to go home.

It's these things that happen that make me wonder how long my marriage is going to last. I love my husband to death, but I cannot stand being around his children. I have no problem with him taking them camping by himself. But honestly I'm not going to go again with them. We have a 17 foot trailer and it's just too close of quarters. We have a 2000 + square foot house, that's bad enough being in there with them. I feel bad for feeling this way, but I need to be honest with both him and myself. This is the way  feel.I

Have the kids sleep in tents outside. They can come in for changing & food or whatever, but sleeping space needs to be separated.

That was the deal but DH feels bad about leaving them outside alone.  Then go sleep with them out there I say..

Yes, let him know that next time, you will not be going unless the kids are in tents. He can sleep out there with them if they are too afraid to do it alone.

That would have driven me crazy too.  I might have pitched my own tent and slept outside instead.

DH feels bad about leaving them outside alone? They are 14 and 15. When we camped, the kids slept in the separate tent when they were ten. They never minded (or if they did knew better than to complain).

As to watching the movie, next time leave the tv at home. They can read, play card games, or board games with each other or with dad.

Outside in a CAMPGROUND! WTH? Uncomfortable with that?! Don't take them then or OP, don't go again.

What is the point of camping if they are going to spend the day at the arcade? Why not just stay at the casino? I thought the whole idea of camping was to spend time outside.

Better yet, why don't you get a room at the casiono tonight?

SilentlyCoping's picture

That's my point too.  This is not camping to me.  This is more of the concrete jungle.  I am close enough to home that I may just end going home to oght.  I don't want to hurt my DH's feelings but I did not marry his kids.  I have absolutely nothing in common with them.  I feel like the evil step mpther but I am not going to be fake.

4 people crammed in a 17' camping trailer (including 2 teens) in the heat watching action movies late at night sounds like my personal idea of hell. And to top it off, DH is annoyed by YOU being tired after his kids kept you awake?

I'd go home and let DH enjoy his time with his kids.

In that case, go home. He obviously does not care about your feelings in this situation. You are not being evil by leaving so they can enjoy themselves.

I say go home. Just let everybody know it’s just too hot for you and you’re not comfortable. But that you want them to have a good time so you’ll head home and see them  later.

I'd rather sleep outside, by a campfire, than in a small camper with a couple of fidgety and noisy people. Campers are not my idea of camping.

Casino to prove how dumb an idea this trip and accommodation space was and when he got back to the camper and sees you aren’t there, shit will get real pretty quick. He might try gaslighting you but if he has common sense and calms down, he will know this shit can’t continue any longer

every year for family holidays my dad flies in from overseas and we visit hubbys family home. hubbys family are always happy to see my dad especially fil. Most of the family sleep in common living areas, only me and hubby have our own room there but we have 2 toddlers.

My sil always makes my dads bed up with a travel mattress in living area and 4 years in a row ss21 will sleep on it. He knows very well he never made his bed but he sees his aunt make a nice spot for my dad to sleep in and he takes it over. 4 yrs in a row my sil tells him to get lost that this is my dads place to sleep.

i didn’t even know this was happening till over a year ago and i asked hubby what shit ill mannered kids he was raising to think this is ok. Hubby was embarassed. Bring the pain!! Sometimes its the only way they realise what arseholes they and their kids are

I'm a little confused. It's aa trailer so did they sleep in the bed with you and DH? On the floor ?

SilentlyCoping's picture

They slept in the dual reclining loveseat that yhe trailer has.  The trailer is built to sleep 2.

17ft is a little tight for more than 2 people. But can be done for a night or two TOPS

We have one that is for epic  glamping...LOVE IT actually. We go to the beaches mostly and large site seeing spots. DH knows not to put me in the woods...ughhh No way...

What you can do OP is talk dh into a larger 'couples unit" with a  queen  pull out sofa, larger bathroom and master bedroom WITH a door.

The door on your sleeping room, assuming you dont have one, does help with privacy. Also look into a unit that has Jack and Jill bathroom. One entry from your bedroom and the other entry for visitor traffic.

Most kids over 17 dont want to go with the 'parents' camping. Then you will have a larger rig for you and dh....

A camping joke amongst other people in middle age,  is dont make the unit too comfy for guests OR they will want to stay longer than 1 or 2 nights....

True.

I LOVE MY FAMILY but ---this rig will be mostly for dh and I Smile

Sorry about your weekend ---seriously I would make dh get a larger "COUPLES" camper. More room for you honey.
