oh hell no! Not MY son!

Dh just called to say that bs3 was really hungry on the way to daycare, but he didn't have time to stop and get him a muffin. I mention that I think he's going through another growth spurt because he's eating way more than usual and is always hungry. Dh says that I need to start feeding him more because he is too skinny. I say no he isn't and we go back and forth a bit. Then dh accuses me of think that bs3 is fat. I say no he isn't fat but he isn't too skinny either...he's perfect. Tall and lean like his mom. He questions me on what the pediatrician says about him and I repeat...that he's perfect.

Dhs whole family is over weight with diabetes. His whole perception of healthy and normal weight is so skewed. SD is 10 and wears size 12/14...so she is on the chunky side...but in his mind e she is skinny. I've given up on the battle to try and get her to a healthy weight since dh is in such denial. When we got custody of her from dhs mom, she was 4 and only a fee pounds from being in the obese category. In his mind she was at a perfect weight and mil insisted she was too thin. The pediatrician drilled and drilled into us at her first appt that she was too heavy and we needed to watch her snacks and cut back on the fried food (mil took her for lunch at McDonalds every single day). Still didnt register. Its like his family has been so surrounded by obesity for so long that its just normal to them. Anyone who isn't extremely overweight is too skinny.

But I will be good and god damned if I let dh ruin bs3's good eating habits by filling him up with junk food and fried food. Great plan...take the healthy kid and make him fatter so your chubby kid looks better in comparison.

I ultimately convinced him that bs3 is healthy (not going to touch the issue of sd's weight with a ten foot pole) and he questions whether I think the baby will lean out. um, yeah obviously he will. All babies are chunky...even bs3 was chunky at 9 months old. He got happy and said he always wondered what he would have looked like if he had grown up tall and lean (bs3 looks like me and bs9months looks like dh). Then he goes....ahh, what could have been if I did t have a mother that led me right down the path to obesity and diabetes.

Its just funny how he can logically see the error of his familys way of eating and lack of excersise....but he emotionally falls right back into the same trap with his kids. Sorry bud...not my kids.

fdh is the same way. weight isn't an issue in his family, there are quite a few overweight people in mine, me included. bs4 is perfect. however, his eating habits suck severely. i don't know what happened, he used to eat normal foods, then it was like a switch was flipped. overnight, he went from normal to only eating pb sandwiches, nuggets, and CRAP. >.<

i have refused him what he wants before. it still doesn't get him to eat what he needs to, but i can at least get him to eat cereal or oatmeal. i keep hoping he will grow out of this. never had this problem with bd18. so fdh constantly comes home with cookies, doritos, and other CRAP that i do NOT want bs having. he goes against me all the damn time. bs has already had a few cavities due to his horrid eating. fdh doesn't seem to care. i want to punch him.

i am going to talk to his dr to see if starving him until he eats right will work, because as horrible as that sounds, none of the other suggestions have worked. offer him the right foods. yeah, i do that every day. he won't take them. so now what? he will not eat unless it is something i mentioned before. maybe if i refuse him anything but real food, he will eat it. it's very frustrating. i don't know what to do. i've never dealt with this before and i thought it was a phase that would be over by now.

fdh doesn't get how serious of a problem it is. he isn't the one who takes him to the dentist, he isn't the one who worries about weight and health. I AM. he just got home from work. he brought cookies for bs. but it's ok, cuz they're sugar free. (eye roll).

Dh undermines me about food all the time... Drives me insane. Just this weekend we were at IKEA and I bought everyone a frozen yogurt before we left. As I was ordering bs asked dh for chips too. So eh came over to help me carry the yogurt and said get be some chips. I say no he's getting this ice cream. Yeah he wants the ice cream too and the chips....no. So we get back to the table and be asks for chips and I say no. As we are finishing our cones dh gets up and takes bs to get his chips...and buys the skids each a hot dog and soda. Never mind they just ate lunch and had an ice cream cone....nope not enough...they need chips and hotdogs too.

I have an insulin-dependent child that follows all his dietary rules even when I am not there, even if another adult (DH included) tries to undermine me. As your child gets older he will probably choose your way if you prepare most of the food.

Try hummus or avocados. Will he eat nuts? My kid loves crackers with peanut butter or that cheese from a can. Anything to get a healthy fat into him. My sister had the same problem with her kids being underweight. BM's solution when one of her kids was underweight was ice cream for every meal. Sad

My ss's doctor actually told us to give him full fat ice cream every day as he was and is underweight.

Give him a pediasure 1-2 times per day for the extra calories...see what the doctor thinks. We give DS4 1 per day he's very muscular. He was born at 26 weeks so he never had any "baby fat" He eats healthy though...he loves salads, eats tomatoes or apples for a snack or celery w/peanut butter. He's a weirdo but at least he has good eating habits.

Bs3 is an absolutely fantastic eater. Loves his fruit, loves vegetables. Loves tofu. Will pretty much eat anything i give him with only a few exceptions (hates ketchup and oatmeal). He will chose water as his drink over soda the vast majority of the time.

Its almost like dh is on a mission to make him be a bad eater. When we were at IKEA he asked the kids what they wanted to drink....skids both chose soda(surprise surprise) and bs3 chose water and dh looked at him like he was nuts and goes...really??? You don't want a soda? I had to jump in and validate his choice before dh guilted him into soda.

My DH does the same thing, tries to give treats to the insulin dependent child and screws up his diet by forgetting a protein source if he prepares him a meal. I look at a power-control thing, he is trying to show me and the kids that he is in charge and buy the children's love with candy and treats.

I wouldn't say your SD is overweight if she is age 10 and wearing 12/14 clothes. My BD, who is actually skinny for her age, is 9 and wears size 10. When SD was 9, she was too fat for girls' 16 1/2. She was wearing women's XL clothing!

I agree with you. We discovered that between DH and BM, SD was getting taken out to eat an average of six times per week. And she ONLY ate fried fatty foods, never fruits or vegetables. DH would take her to this Chinese buffet and she would get friend noodles, battered fried chicken dishes, fried wontons and egg rolls. I instituted the rule that she had to eat ONE vegetable and they both got pissed at me. Ridiculous.

My BDs eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, whether they like it or not. Smile

I know that its not a given that she would he overweight in that size clothing....but she is overweight. She first was in that size at 9.5 (she only just turned 10) and she's in that size for her girth not her height. I have to hem up all her pants because they are inches too long for her.

She actually has some clothes that are 14/16.

Yep, SD was the same way only she was in 16-plus clothes at age 9! DH's excuse was that her "legs were too short." Um, no, her belly is too big. There's not much you can do when it's not your kid, unfortunately.

my neice who is getting ready to turn 8-wears a size 16 in girls! Hell, even with me being pleasantly plump can sometimes wear a 16 or xl in girls clothes! My 11 year old dd wears a size 10. My ss who is almost 15 can actually wear a size 4/5 toddler shorts! Kids come in all sizes-the important thing is that they have a healthy diet.
