Advice given to me...

Overwhelmed in Texas's picture

I've been talking to a counselor on and off to try and help me figure out, not so much how to deal with the situation I'm in, but how I got into it in the first place....

Anyway, one of the things I have a tendency to do, which based on some of the blogs I've been reading, I'm not the only one....is to do too much or feel guilty about not doing enough to the point of exhaustion.

So the counselor gave me this advice, which really hit home...he said for me to think about when I go on an airplane and how before we take off the steward gives instructions regarding the air mask...that BEFORE you assist anyone else with their air mask, you MUST put your OWN on first! In other words, you will be no help at all to anyone eles if you don't take care of yourself first!

I'm going to try taking care of myself this week....guilt free!

What an elegant way of putting it! Yes, I figured if this doesn't work out I want to make damn sure I don't get myself in the same situation again....a friend once told me that she keeps dating the same guy over and over again, the only difference is he has a different face and name each time!

I couldn't agree more! My therapist gave me "permission" to do something for myself and / or spend some time alone. She said that a lot of women do this. They feel that they should be the primary care giver and that we shouldn't take time out for ourselves. She basically said that in order to not feel so guilty about taking that time that we need "permission" to take it...so she gave me permission. I am giving you Overwhelmed permission to take care of you! *HUGS*
