I Need Your Help QUICK!

This battle has been going on for quite sometime. Some of my past blogs talk about it as well. Last year BM starting giving Omegas (fish oil) to SD in hopes of stablizing her behavior...didnt work. Starting last summer she put her on Zyrtec for her allergies to pollen and senstivity to cats. This seemed to help with her allergy symptoms. Cooler weather came, SD was still given the zyrtec. It is now winter and SD has starting back on a 2.5mg dosage of zyrtec. Here's why.
BM decided that since it was winter, the pollen count was probably down so she could come off of it. She took it upon herself to purchase these chewable tablets that are for concentration because 'her head was always in the clouds.' BM told me that Tuesday SD came home from school emotionally all over the place and she immediately realized she needed her zyrtec. After giving her 2.5mg of the stuff, she did an immediate turn around.
This is my problem. In my heart, I do not think SD should be given an allergy pill because she is all over the place emotionally. I called my pharmacist to ask him about the 2.5mg dosage and he told me that the chances of SD (8 at almost 90lbs)feeling anything from that dosage are very minimal. I wrote BM an email asking if she really thought it was appropriate to give SD an allergy pill because she is being emotional and crabby? BM replied that she didnt care how or why, just that it was working.
Should you really give an allergy pill to a child just because they are whiny?!?!
I honestly think that the only thing WORKING is the friggin antihistamine. Sd herself has admitted that she gets tired while taking them and BM has now put it in SD's head that she needs these pills to feel better. SD wouldnt stop talking about it yesterday.
I do not want to give a sedative pill to my step-daughter that I do not believe she needs. Her behavior is that of a normal 8 year old here, but apparantly shes the complete opposite at BMs.
I need help figuring out this mess.
Also...
So for a few weekends while she's with us, to see if its psychological, I'm giving SD placebos.

that is a great idea......JMO, I would then take your results to the doctor, to prove to BM that sd does not need the pills. What a bad habit to start a kid on....pills will make it all better~ sick!!"~waiting on the world to change~"

As for Zyrtec everyday? I take it 365 and it is wonderful. Prior to daily allergy meds I would get allergy induced bronchitis 3-5 times per year. Now I get it maybe once per year.

I do not notice it making me tired but, it has been so long since I was not taking a daily allergy med that I am not sure if I remember my energy levels before.

Obviously the message BM is sending is alarming. Giving an 8yr old the idea that the only way to feel good is to take a pill every day is setting her up for some potentially major issues. My own SS (16) is supposed to be on a daily allergy med but does not usually take it. He ends up with the periodic sinus or lung infection. Guess what? He turns in to major snot generator then feels miserable for a few days then he gets better. When he starts feeling bad he starts taking his allergy meds for a few days until he feels better. Then he forgets and may or may not be miserable from his allergies.

I have had moderate to sever allergies my entire life. At worst they made me feel miserable but nothing more.

I would document BM's tendency to medicate and do what you can to counter that influence.

I like the placebo idea BTW.

Good luck and best regards,

SD's allergies are not what is making her emotionally unstable though. She gets respitory infections often this time of year but honest to God, being sick doesnt phase her one bit.

I dont know the emotional link either.
Bm has spoken about taking her to therapist, but it never goes any further than that.
I am digging up all of my old email to and from BM right now and noting what happened when as it turns out the sleep doctor that BM took SD to see told BM to give SD an over-the-counter allergy pill. This began in May.
We have tried to tell BM that we are not going to give SD the Zyrtec whilst she is here but she flips out saying it isnt fair because she gets worse when she goes back to BMs house.
