OT: Free cars for Welfare Recipients

So I live in Mass..and there is a program on the table since 2006 that is now undergoing fire because they want more funding for it...basically welfare receipients get free donated cars , welfare pays the insurance, AAA coverage for a year so that the recipient can get a job...after the year they can keep the car regardless of whether they have a job or not....here is a link to more info:

I'm sure this has good and bad points..but seriously..from what I've read so far..there is no "policing" what they actually do with the car and a large percentage of people end up BACK on welfare..while I think the program has a good foundation..meaning the idea is good..I think there needs to be alot stricter guidelines..like how about giving a car to someone that actually has STARTED a job..as a bonus for getting one..say someone that has to ride a bus to drop off kids to daycare and than a bus to work..

In my case BM lives with her mom..pays no rent, gets welfare, food stamps..etc. and now she'll get a free car. She has already told FH that she doesn't "have to work cuz' her mom takes care of her".

Than you take REAL hardworking single moms..I remember pushing my BD in a snowstorm IN a baby carriage to daycare so that I could than WALK to work so that I wouldn't have to go on welfare at all. I didn't have a car. I waited until my tax refund came in and than bought a dumpy car to get around.

of hours of civil service to earn the car. Mowing, raking, that sort of thing in the summer, snow removal for the elderly in the winter...

I'm all for helping the less fortunate, that is, helping them help themselves. But c'mon! There's plenty of parks needing cleaned up, etc, for them to "earn" a car, IMHO.

I remember being a single mom as well, who used to catch the bus to the daycare and work to keep from going on welfare when my x-husband left me with a 6 months old to take care of by myself. Hell, i purchased my first cluncker of a car with my tax return as well. I did what i had to do.

I didn't complain it was necessary cause i was not going back home to my parents home.

If they are going to provide them free transportation, I believe they need to put strict parameters on it. The receiptent needs to be able to show they are working within 90 days or the car goes back to be given to someone else.

Then in another 6 months they should be paying all of the monies in regards to the car, insurance etc.
