Am I wrong here?

Am I wrong or should 8 year old girls eat with a fork? Seriously, my stepdaughter [princess of the world] wont eat with a fork. I have tried everything. I want to poke her with the fork. Is this a problem now a days? I have grown children in their 20s. they have used forks since their toddler days. I dont understand and it makes me crazy everytime we eat dinner.

lol. Def SHOULD eat with a fork. Tell her - fork or no food. My SD8 always pretends that she can't cut her meals with a knife so that someone else will do it for her. It can be pancakes and she'll make this face and see if anyone is looking at her "struggle". Or she'll pretend she's afraid of the knife, even if its a butter knife! Get real, grow up, not a baby anymore!

My BD4 has been using a fork for over a year now :? I think the 8 yr old can figure it out!!

2 year olds should eat with a fork. My 6 year old would just as soon cut ME with the knife than allow me to cut her food for her. Why would anyone want to be so freaking dependent on others to get through life? I swear my ss can't wash a dish at 16. t least not well enough for me to use it after.

She should be using a fork. Unless she eats with her hands, let her be.

I assume she's eating with a spoon. As soon as her peers (friends or cousins her age) find out that she is still eating like a baby, they'll tease her so bad she'll be begging you for a fork.

nope. she wont use a spoon either. If she is with peers she will pick her food up with one hand and put it on the fork she is holding with the other. sometimes she is too lazy to put it on the fork and just shoves it in her face.
the problem is that for the first 5 years she was raised by gramma who found it easier just to do everything for her. Now I moved in with single dad and gramma [who is terminally ill] and kid. So the kid does nothing for herself unless she is alone with me. and when we are all together someone inevitably plays the terminal card. so if princess wants gramma to feed her that is what occurs. she pulls the same crap other places but i dont stand for it. If she throws a fit I pull out my camera and film her. then threaten to post it to her class at school. i know it is blackmail but it is what I have had to resort too. Cant do it with the gramma thing though...

My SD8 is similar. I've caught her many times picking food up and putting it on the fork. Defeats the whole purpose and then her face and hands are a nasty mess, which she NEVER seems to notice. Drives me crazy. I've also thought dirty kids were gross, especially once they were old enough to know better.

O. M. G. Youve gotta be kidding me!!! My DD is 8, and there is no way in hell that Id be okay with that!!!!! Thats just unbelievable. Hmm. Id make a new rule in the house, no fork= no eat. That BS about putting her food in one hand then applying it onto a fork is wierd!!! Perhaps a light tutorial on how to use ones fork is in order, then its fork or no food!!!! Perhaps gma thought she was doing for the wee one, but all she truly did was stunt this girls development.

How does she eat a sundae?? No spoon? Oh wow!!! This truly takes the cake. This is insane!!!

My ss8 had never used a knife and fork (or eaten a proper meal - he eats sandwiches, bread rolls or toast for tea at BM's) or finger food basically - sausages in bread, anything he can eat with his hands.

WE (LOL the royal we as in at MY house!) eat AT the dinner table with a knife and fork and even miss 6 only needs occasional help to cut up the more difficult things but can manage on her own.

The first time ss8 used a knife and fork SO was SOOOOO proud - you'd have thought the kid was a genius - I smiled and nodded but wanted to scream that it was sooooo backwards LOL

SS8 noticed how much attention he got from daddy so now *if* he attempts to use the cutlery he makes such a big deal about how clever he is (dd6 rolls her eyes like he's retarded LOL - shouldn't encourage this but it does amuse me)

But most meals he just picks up his food and shoves it in.

It's a battle I have chosen not to have - my kids eat healthy meals with cutlery, his eat sausages in bread and no vegies etc (or cutlery LOL) When any of them ask I tell them (all) that it is because I care that my children eat healthy and have good table manners.... SO and I had discussed this and he doesn't see the harm in them having their sausage in bread, and eating with their hands, I told him what I would say if asked...

(ok - so perhaps I have just chosen to have the battle subtly Wink )

How she eats a sunday? She picks it up and sticks her face into it. Same with pudding or yogurt. She is a mess all the time. Her hair always has food in it.
I wish I could get used to it but it totally grosses me out. Her father and Gramma have no problem with it. If it was up to me I would go with -no fork - no food -. But if I play any kind of concequence card I have to deal with "dying gramma". It is an impossible situation. Because his family has a very strong tradition of respecting elders, he will not stand up to his mother. Funny because what the two of them are doing is like going out of their way to teach the kid not to have respect for herself or others.
so frustrating
