How Would This Work With StepParenting?

Oh man, as I was reading this article the thought crossed my mind--how in the world would this work with Stepparents?
The closest thing they would have to a teacher or authority figure is the parent implementing this "unschooling." The kid will be "self-motivated"? If you listen to the mother, she stated that she didn't want to influence/diminish his individual force of will. Are you serious?

excuse me? WTH? "I dodn't WANT to learn to read, but eventually did because of a card game" and mom is/was a teacher? Aren't "private" and "Home" schools regulated? I have NO problem with home schooling, as long as the kid is LEARNING something. This half ass "parenting" if you can call it that is just stupid. And allmitchell, the kids probably won't be able to get a job at McDonalds because he "never wanted to learn Math and didn't see a need for it"
