Swearing in front of adults?

Pagan's picture

My SS18 swears when he is talking to DW all the time and she doesn't bat an eye. He drops the f-bomb like its nothing. I certainly don't expect to hear "no ma'am" come out of his mouth but "f*ck no"?? I am expecting him to say "pass the f*cking gravy" at the dinner table one of these days. Is this a "normal teenage" thing to do? DW seems to think that it is harmless and he will grow out of it. I feel like it is extremely disrespectful and I have told him that he should not get in the habit of using language like that. The comment went unheeded. Don't know if I should be more strict or let it slide. Only two months till he moves out.

Yup...things have changed...I am 27 and I still HARDLY EVER swear in front of those I consider to be my elders. It's a respect thing - I guess not everyone teaches these things these days. Uh - I find that when teens - and I know the law says 18 is an adult - I disagree...they are still mentally super young...I think this is a case of - a mom or dad that raised him as a friend - not a parent. Just saying...my opinion.

At this stage in the game, it's more of an adult to adult talk to have. "Excuse me, I would appreciate it if you don't use language like that in my house." "I'm going to have to ask you to leave if you keep talking like that" "You need to leave my house right now if you're going to continue talking like that. You are welcome to return when you've decided to clean it up." If a friend was at my house talking like that, that is what I would do. An adult child is no different to me.
