o/t neighbors dog

An off topic blog about a dog...

I have an apartment and our neighbors have a very love able and energetic Labrador dog that is under exorcized. Their dog is not trained nor is it leashed. This dog will sniff us out 'crotches and ass hard core'  what seems like every time we step out and I can't take it anymore. We are clean people and I'm already dreading the warmer days of going out wearing just shorts and dresses at this rate.

We have made noise about them using a leash and so forth but this is even causing conflict between my hubby and I because this dog does like me but this issue is worse when I'm on the cycle so what can I do to stop it??

Owners don't seem to care, our words are ineffective, kicking is wrong, and I'm tempted to use pepper spray to end it for once and all. Its a drastic measure that I'm not wanting to take but I don't know what else I can do at this point in time. Is it illegal for me to use pepper spray on my neighbors dog that is sticking its nose in my private parts against my will? Owners don't show any concern either.

Please don’t use pepper spray on this poor dog, it’s not his fault his owners are terrible at discipline, and it’s unnecessarily cruel. If you’re going to pepper spray anyone, spray the dogs owners.

If you’re that upset with it, tell them. Who cares if it causes drama? You’re already experiencing drama because the dog bothers you this much, so what do you have to lose? Or simply teach the dog boundaries yourself so he doesn’t do it to you.

On the dog!  That’s just so cruel and unjustified!

If after again trying to talk to the neighbors, why not try all of these which do not cruelly injure the poor dog:

1) Do the neighbors live in the same apartment complex?  If so, talk to management about enforcing leash laws.

2) Try talking to the other neighbors about having them enforce as well.

3) Document the dogs behavior and your attempts to work with the neighbors.

4) Call up your local animal control officer, explain the situation and ask them to help intervene.  They would, in my experience, be happy to prevent a tragedy!

Again, please do not mistreat the animal who is not harming you, but was just saddled with lousy owners.

Think of the poor things owners as the Disney pet parents they are.  The dog likes you, but no one has taught it how to behave around you.  It is speaking in dog language, and when dogs get together they sniff butts.  It needs to be taught not to.

The problem is the owners, so spray them.  Or, take a non-violent route.  You have options.

1) yes

2) They do not speak up. They have a smaller dog and they carry their dog elsewhere before setting him down to go on their walk..using a leash too. This Labrador shows aggression towards other dogs.

3) That is an excellent idea!

4) I am going to make that call Monday morning.

Thank you for sharing your helpful suggestions.

First off, please do not pepper spray the dog. That is heartless and cruel and could land you with an animal cruelty prosecution. (If you pepper sprayed my dog, you bet I would have you prosecuted.)

If you need an effective deterent, try someting like SprayShield  https://www.amazon.com/SprayShield-Animal-Deterrent-Spray-Belt/dp/B0002X... I actually have used it - and tested it on myself... Its annoying but not as bad as pepper spray. I also will not recommend ultra-sonic whistles against dogs. Apparently they are effective, usually against barking, or annoying behaviour, but I have not seen any real testing of the products so don't know what damage can be caused.

Now to the dog... The poor animal's behaviour is caused by bad owners. Maybe you should pepper spray your neglectful neighbours who seem to have no business owning a dog. In the same way, we wave or shake hands with people, dogs do crotch sniffing... Yes, it is invasive and unwanted behaviour, but the dog doesn't know or understand it, especially if he hasn't been trained not to do it. So I understand your frustration, but it is normal dog behaviour.
I would also recommend you either make a formal complaint to animal control authorities or your HoA about the dog and get propper enforcement and compliance through that route. Your neighbours do not care about your complaints so it may be best to escalate it to an authority who can make them care.

Please don't blame the puppy, it is the owners who suck.

ETA: a squirty bottle with a strong solution of lemon juice and water is also an effective deterent for an annoying dog. Spray range is smaller, but will sting the dog's eyes and nose without lasting harmful effects. (And again you can test it on yourself... Or skid.)

Rest assured that I was only venting about using pepper spray, I could never do that!! I have wanted to use it on the owners except that too would only create bigger problems. Am going to speak with the owners again and contact the local animal control officers which I didn't think of doing.

We have been correcting the dog and speaking up to the owners, they truly just don't care yet they have complained about the other dogs not being on leashes because of their garden being pissed on and dog poop where they walk. I told them everybody should be using a leash on their dogs.

I feel sorry for this dog, she is being love able and yea she really doesn't know any different. Thank you for the link on the SprayShield, I most definitely will be looking that up! I'm nervous about using the water bottle with lemon juice, hoping to avoid causing the dog any pain. Will resort to it if need be. I have considered spraying something on myself that wouldn't harm the dog, wasn't sure what options I had should I use that idea.

Sorry, I had to vent for it has been frustrating and embarrassing, I'm only angry at the owners. Hubby did push the dog away from me here the other day as he shouted at her to leave me alone, that was his way of giving the owners a warning that we are really fed up with dealing with this unwanted behavior. I was unloading the vehicle and the dog came running right to me. I'm grateful that somebody had my back that wasn't the dog.

Is it sad that I'm even embarrassed for the owners? It's not a cute sight to see.

I do apologize if I did upset anyone when I was venting above, shame on me for not making it clear that I won't actually be using pepper spray on the dog. I am disappointed with myself that that thought even came to mind. I only want this behavior to stop and without harming the dog in any way. The owners call their dog weird names as if its cute when we correct this unwanted behavior, I don't understand that. Meh!

Should anyone read this, the problem has finally been solved. I'm not sure if my neighbors overheard me venting or if it was when my hubby strongly reacted and became very vocal in doing so but the dog owners are firmly correcting their dog for once. I will use needed action as suggested above should it go back to how it was. I'm just going to roll with it as long as they keep their pooches nose away from our private parts. Why can't it be that easy with Skids bio parents!?!
