Steperg,

Discipline, structure, self confidence, accountability for his own actions and time to mature. This is what I hope the military can help him with. Once he learns these things he will be an absolutely incredible young man and well on his way to viable adulthood.

He is extremely intelligent, very polite and a joy to be around when there are no expectations of performance from him.

Actually my wife understands that he absolutely needs the military at this stage of his life. Analytically she is on board. Now that it is getting close to time for him to shit or get off of the pot she is going in to mommy mode and getting a bit panicky about the possibility of Afghanistan or Iraq. I pulled the fatality statistics off of the DOD web site that show the statistical fatality data being roughly equivalent to peace time and conflict since the mid 1980's. Statistically there is little difference between deaths due to training accidents during peacetime and the fatality rates since W began the 911 retaliation in Afghanistan and Iraq.

I know I am being totally non emotional and analytical about this and I do understand my wife's concern.

But this kid needs a Gunny's boot up his ass so he will keep his head out of his ass.

I could have used the Marines when I was his age. Unfortunately as a Child Onset Diabetic I did not have the opportunity and had to take a much longer and more convoluted journey to viable adulthood. Heck, my parents would say I am still working on it.

I don't want my kid to take the very long path I had to take to adult enlightenment.

Best regards,

That is exactly how I feel. I am not interested in spending any money on SD's future if she is just going to throw it all away for the sake of not wanting to have to do anything. There is an ROTC program at her high school that I would love to see her in and would love it even more if she went into the military. We are a military family, air force, and I am all for some discipline, structure, and responsibility being put into her life. It is not working with us doing it, but she seems to respect other people more than she does her own family, so maybe the military is what she needs.
Good luck with figuring out just exactly what to do for him. I think you are right, hoo rah!

I'll be the odd one out. It is possible. I SUCKED in high school. Had NO interest in what I was being forced to learn. Acted out and got lots of detentions. However, when it came to college, I shined. But then again, it was my own money that paid for it, so maybe that was the difference. Plus, in college, once the general ed classes are done, you can take the classes that interest you in your field of study. So I think it IS possible, but it depends on the person. If there's no interest in high school, a few years off to work might jolt him back to reality and make him WANT to study.

Hey, it can happen.

I barely graduated HS. I was very smart, VERY SMART but I had a lot of problems at home my Junior and Senior year. Literally, it was down to the last two weeks of school for me. My mom was planning a grad party but I wasn't even sure I was gonna graduate.

But when I got to college, I snapped! While others were out partying and hanging out, I was studying and busting my butt! I looked at college as a fresh start, a clean slate, and I kicked ass!!

My parents did NOT pay my way, however (couldn't afford it if they wanted to) and the fact that it was MY money going down the drain if I effed up was a small part of my motivation.

But like I said, It can happen!

Oh ..... my Skid WILL go to college and I will pay for it. But only after he proves that his head is for ever out of his ass.

He really is a great kid with no drive, no direction and no clue.

When he has a clue he will get some version of the Rags full ride scholarship for college and he will keep it as long as he performs.

Cross your fingers for him. He needs all of the help he can get.
