Has anyone had their DH lose a job or get demoted? What happened to support?

So long story short, DH got his bonus today. It was not good. Like half of normal not good. He is in a profession where 50% of his salary comes as a bonus, so this is like a 25% pay cut for the year, that we just found out about.

Those of you who have read my past blogs know that DH and BM have four kids in private school that they can barely afford (and that I make up budget shortfalls in our house). Well now they just plain can't afford it. My question is what will happen if BM doesn't see the light. If they go before a judge, what is likely to happen?

Keep in mind that this isn't the usual losing a job scenario, because DH can't go out and get a new job to recoup the money. He can get a new job, but wouldn't get another bonus until next December. The money for this year is irretrievably lost.

Thanks for the advice.

Yes, DH is going to file tomorrow. We hope we can work this out with BM, but if we can't we will go to court. I was curious if the judge would be likely lower support though. I have heard stories from posters of judges not changing support when dad loses his job.

Annith has a good idea about seeing if the school has scholarship money. File for a reduction asap.

Ok I will tell DH to contact schools tomorrow and ask. We have prepaid most of this year's tuition though - the schools get the majority of it before the new year, so it is really more next year's tuitions that we won't have money for. (as in starting next september)

I appreciate the help, but no way are we taking out a loan to keep the kids in private school. If we can't afford it, we can't afford it.

As long as we can get a judge to decrease support and change the split on private school tuition to something that accurately reflects DH's new income we'll be fine. BM won't be able to afford her part, and the debate will be over. My fear is that the judge won't change a thing.

Also, WUAB, depending on what state the divorce case is in, there should be forms online for DH to file for reducing CS. All that has to be done is printing them off, filling them out, and mailing them out.
